What's it like being a lawyer?

Almost no serious Australian lawyer works in the Australian office of a US or UK firms; the only exception to that is Bakers (which is for those who are serious, but were pushed out of Mallesons for not being up to scratch). As for the original questions: Does uni prepare you well for work as...

Practicing law with a criminal record

The conviction might preclude you being admitted, which would mean that you'd be unable to practice. How likely that is depends on the nature of the offence for which you were convicted.

    Addicted to prestige?

Certainly the prestige of working in a "big law firm" has been a factor in my study and career choices, but the main factor has really been competitive drive. I suspect that's true of many law students. I suppose that this is the "need to achieve" that you mentioned but it's probably more...

    Law degrees "useless"

What a hilarious thread. Nothing brings on the laughs like a bunch of first-to-third year students telling each other what it's "really like" in various professions (including quoting wildly inaccurate pay figures) and lecturing each other on the social utility of various degrees.

Common law & statute - what is applicable?

Some of the rules that need to be used in this situation have been accurately described here, but it's very important to remember that the extent to which any particular statute overrides the common law or works with it is a question of statutory interpretation and will vary between statute...

    Law Week

It depends what you mean by "most peoples' league". You'll want to be on or close to and honours average to have a good chance at any of the top-tiers, particularly Mallesons, Allens, Freehills and Clayton Utz. But there are always exceptions. And the general opinion around the marketplace...

It's very different, but that's hardly surprising.

    Butterworths Series

Ah yes, everyone's a Ross Anderson fan.

    Butterworths Series

I've always found those Butterworths summary guides (or, indeed, those of any publisher) to be close to useless. The only way in which they might be of value is in helping you structure your notes if the convenor / lecturer has done a poor job of arranging the course.

    Law Diploma or Grad Law?

Re: Law Diploma or Grad entry into B.Laws They're equivalent in as far as either gaining an LLB from a university / law school or completing the LPAB course is sufficient to fulfill the academic requirements for admission in NSW. I don't know enough about the LPAB or most universities / law...

    2006 USYD Law I

Yes, don't stress too much and just enjoy your classes and life at uni generally. The content of the Foundations of Law (or whatever they're calling it this year) isn't conceptually difficult, though depending on the state and extent of your present knowledge of the law and the legal profession...

    2006 USYD Law I

I'd pay good money to see a McCallum / Jones double-act. And coulda, your enthusiasm is commendable but you may want to think about dialling it down a bit at uni, especially in your law classes.
