    2024 HSC Chat

tbh uni is really fun and not that stressful, the main problem for most people is because of how short each semester and the lack of accountability it’s really easy to fall behind at which point it can definitely become more stressful and easy to screw up. the exam periods are generally similar...

    How are people so smart?

my school had had no b6 in 4 of my subjects for like 4 years before my year, just because it hasn’t happened much in the past doesn’t mean you can’t :)

    Does university prestige actually matter?

if you’re not getting financial support you’ll end up having to work so much that you won’t make the most of the university opportunities anyway, I would probably just go to a university with more reasonable cost of living. there is definitely a difference but the difference from having to work...

    University for Undergrad Mechanical Engineering

I’ve still enjoyed usyd comp sci a lot so far but there is some pretty poor organisation, like they were still adding test cases to our assignment for like 2 weeks after they gave it to us, and still fixing issues in the description until like 3 days before the due date…

    University for Undergrad Mechanical Engineering

that’s for general rankings not just engineering (which is a strong suit of unsw) but generally I wouldn’t really say that rankings are a good way to make university decisions beyond a rough guide on reputation

Math Extension 2 + Math Extension 1 vs Math Extension 1 + Math Advanced

they take in aligned marks, which are sort of an intermediary between raw marks and the scaled marks which are added to determine your atar, and are the ones you get from nesa on hsc results day. and yes, a raw mark somewhere in the 60s in maths ext 2 typically aligns to a 90

Math Extension 2 + Math Extension 1 vs Math Extension 1 + Math Advanced

what marks are you putting in to get this result? this should definitely not be the case, if anything for identical marks the atar with ext 2 should be much much higher because the scaling for ext 2 is much better - not that scaling should be a reason to choose a subject, a higher scaling...

is it true that a 60 raw mark scales to a 90 in extension 2 math?

a 60 won’t align to a 90, but yes the aligned mark for an E4 (and hence 90) is usually in the mid-high 60s

Hypothetically, what would happen if for my mod C I write about how much I hate English mod A and B?

I would avoid it for in school assessments, the teachers are the ones marking your papers after all, and they will usually mark ideas similar to theirs higher. you can do whatever for the hsc though as long as it’s well written and fits the rubric for a good mark

Can someone explain to me how the depth studies work?

    Internals; do they get scaled?

it won’t be exactly 20 percent because between first and last it’s also based on relative mark differences between rankings etc but on a fundamental level yes, if your whole cohort did badly around that mark area then yes you would get a mark around 20%. this is fair because 80-90% is clearly an...
