Year 9-10 Maths Discussion & Resources

Discuss all your questions for maths related topics for the year 9-10 curriculum here. If you have any links to past tests, exam papers from your school that would also be nice (if you decided to share). I also decided to create a poll about what textbook your school uses. (If your school uses...

    HSC 2017-2018 Maths Marathon

Re: HSC 2017 Maths (Advanced) Marathon I learnt something new I guess, I always had the assumption that with congruency tests, that if there was a right angle in there, it was always RHS. Not sure if the majority of HSC and prelim students knew that in the back of their mind. (And I'm not...

    HSC 2017-2018 Maths Marathon

    Re: HSC 2017 Maths (Advanced) Marathon I was also looking to compare (b) v (f)....................earlier I mentioned (b) v (d)

    HSC 2017-2018 Maths Marathon

Re: HSC 2017 Maths (Advanced) Marathon ^^ I can see it now . It's something that I never really looked into specifically. SO I take it, if they give the hypotenuse length and a right angle, we can conclude its a RHS . (also one of the adjacent or opposite lengths) If we are given a right...

    HSC 2017-2018 Maths Marathon

Re: HSC 2017 Maths (Advanced) Marathon Congruency test I came across this question tonight and wanted to clear a couple of things up. At times could we use either RHS test or SAS test to explain parts (b) and (f)? They are exactly the same shape as one can see and the Cambridge textbook gives...

    HSC 2017 MX1 Marathon

This was the solution: I had my own solution. With geometry proofs Im aware that there are multiple ways you can go about explaining step by step. \angle AED=180-a $ (supplementary angle)$ \angle EAB=180-a $ (alternate angles, $ AB||DE) \angle ABC= 180-(180-a+c) $ (Angle sum of a...

    Cambridge Prelim MX1 Textbook Marathon/Q&A

Re: Year 11 Mathematics 3 Unit Cambridge Question & Answer Thread EX 9A Q 12, I've seen the first stage in writing the answer as : \sqrt{x^2+y^2}+y=2 Part of the reason I've seen is that 'P must above the x-axis' \implies |y|=y I'm not sure why they add the 'y' to it still? It has...

How do you get over feeling competitive?

The thing with study is every individual goes into final exams, thinking & wanting to be top dog, or getting the highest bands/ranks. Came across a Year 12 kid today , saying "I only want a Band 6"' standard for a Maths exam. He also happened to have said something "I want to get into a good...

How do I study for the SATs?

Would it be unusual for an adult sitting a SAT exam at a high school setting? I see that there are registered SAT centres (a mix of universities and high schools). One example of a high school centre in Sydney is The Scots College, a university setting at University of Canberra.

    IB Maths Marathon

Re: International Baccalaureate Marathon Back to back mistakes on this paper. Part (i) is wrong . If I was an IB marker, I would have penalized 1 mark in Q3 and 1 mark in Q4. Working out step by step was correct.

    IB Maths Marathon

Re: International Baccalaureate Marathon ^^ Because part (a) is wrong, part (b) which follows is also wrong.

    HSC 2017-2018 Maths Marathon

Re: HSC 2017 Maths (Advanced) Marathon I came across a question in the Cambridge textbook today and I haven't looked at the answer yet. \int^{5}_{4} \ dx= I'm assuming its a constant of 1 next to the dx when we integrate it? Somebody could confirm

Thinking of repeating the High School Certificate, help!

What places allow you to repeat the HSC? I actually enquired and look around last year. THere was a TAFE that offered that option, where they offer the student (in most cases I think mature age students) to come back and complete the Yr 11/12 equivalent to be able to get the HSC certificate.

    IB Maths Marathon

Re: International Baccalaureate Marathon 2016 Not sure if there are any IB markers in here but I came across a question like this tonight, which is equivalent to a Band 5 HSC question: 'A circular disc is cut into twelve sectors whose angles are in an arithmetic sequence. The angle of the...

Is it beneficial to study from two textbooks?

The more , the merrier I say. Definitely an advantage learning from more than 2 resources. Some concepts are explained better in other resources compared to others.
