    Common ion effect

yep abdooo is right... equilibrium position is determined in this case by partial pressures of the gases, and there is no change if inert gas is added (provided the mix is still an ideal gas but it's probably not, considering such high pressures)

    Common ion effect

hah i guess u haven't read upto it yet common-ion effect is smth like the solubility of Ag2SO4 is actually reduced when sulfate (such as from Na2SO4) is already in solution. sulfate in this case is the "common ion"

    Common ion effect

ooo abdooo's been reading up and btw i dun see how this discussion has anything to do with the common-ion effect

    Conics question

i believe that the equation of the tangent is the only one u need, and the one that u shouldn't really get wrong. And as for PX/PY, u can use similar triangles to make another shortcut. drop a perpendicular from P onto the X axis and call that Q. then becos OXY is similar to QXP, u can say...

Just some help on a question

i guess u can do a flame test on it. if it's lilac color it's prolly the K2SO4. i'll leave it to u guys to guess wot color the sugar would give.

    4Units Problem-Solving section

well Wohzazz asked for 'accepted shortcuts' so... anyway, my answer was just a shortcut that u can only do with 5% of conics questions, and its unlikely u can make a repeat performance of it in the HSC

    safety

if u're using glass pipettes, u can say not to hold the pipette below the bulb when inserting the pipette filler (cos it may break and stab into your palm)

    4Units Problem-Solving section

u can solve the case for the circle x^2 + y^2 = a^2 using similar triangles, and then squish it into an ellipse. because you're not changing the x-co-ords of any point during this transformation, the value OT*ON is still preserved.

    Soft Drink Prac

no, it's related to the pressure in the can because it's a closed system, but it's also because the CO2 is dissolved. remember that gases are particles that are very well spaced apart, but when dissolved, they are more close together

dissolve in water, then add barium nitrate. ppt: sulfate no ppt: sugar just make sure there's no sulfate impurities in the sugar

    Ruse

my experience with ppl at ruse is that "some of" the ones that are average to above-average tend to work their butts off, and the average to below-par ppl tend to shrug it off and tell others they "have a life", etc etc.

    Tutoring?

well honestly speaking, some teachers and tutors that i consider the best, do spoonfeed, and they do it quite a lot. but the reason why i think they're good is because they have funky methods of learning that u can mimic. so they dont just spoonfeed, they cook as well, using the same...

When to use "by inspection" as a reason?

firstly, NEVER use 'by inspection' in geometry. otherwise, i must say i've never used 'by inspection' as any reason for something equalling another. 'by inspection' is really another way of saying 'btw, i've skipped some steps'. if i tend to skip steps, i'd just go ahead and do it without...

    Ruse

but an awful lot of ppl get de-motivated by the same reason...too many smart ppl tends to make it too hard to bother trying to achieve something...

    "making up" geo theorems

    let z = f(@) = cos@ + isin@ then f'(@) = -sin@ + icos@ the integral I{ f'(@)/f(@) }d@ = ln[f(@)] notice that f'(@)/f(@) = i thus I{ i }d@ = ln(z) i@ = ln(z) z = e^i@ no point using e^i@ instead of cis@ tho...

How long does the exam take

it's all about having or not having done similar questions before; question 8 is no different from any other question... it's just questions with 2, 3 or 4 different topics mixed together into a question. having said that, i find that the only reason why most ppl take absurd amounts of time...

    Money spent on tuition

it's not such a strange phenomenon that ppl tend to prefer getting tutored on their worst subjects.
