It was a very emotional experience

As this uses a result that is beyond the scope of the syllabus, you would be treading on thin ice if you tried this in an exam.

    James Ruse trials

Naming the parallel lines IS important if there is more than one pair. It is not a selective school thing. (Not sure why 'being alternate angles' equates to 'something stupid') Being penalised for sensible abbreviations though is ridiculous. But this is coming from instructions from head HSC...

ext 1 prelim vs ext 2 hsc

It is a huge leap, and many people get disheartened. But it is worth it in the end. A raw HSC exam mark of about 68 scales to 90 - you are rewarded handsomely for your efforts. And if you don't find the maths so far all that challenging, you are probably capable of doing better than that.

    HSC 2015 MX1 Marathon (archive)

Re: HSC 2015 3U Marathon I stand corrected about the term. But I maintain that separation of variables will not be asked. And even though that question was in the Ext 2 HSC, it should not have been phrased like that because the concept of a 'solution' to a differential equation is not...

Mate, it is not year 10 work, it is uni work. You really couldn't pick up on the joke?

    HSC 2015 MX1 Marathon (archive)

Re: HSC 2015 3U Marathon It wouldn't be asked even in Ext 2 because (i) the term "differential equation" is not in the syllabus (either Ext 1 or Ext 2) (ii) although many students do use separation of variables, that concept is also not in the Ext 1 or Ext 2 course. But it will be in...

North Sydney Boys YEAR 9 TEST Help/info/tips?

News just in on the year 9 NSB entrance test - you will need to solve partial differential equations, do Fourier analysis and linear regression. Sorry for the late reply - I guess you are stuffed.

    Atar Estimate 99+ :)

I get 99.2 But I didn't count Economics. I find it interesting that you have 102 Economics students this year at Ruse, yet last year you had only 7 top bands - lower than state average. Is Ruse really that bad at Economics, or do you have significantly more Eco students this year than you...

    weightings and internal marks

Firstly, schools will often scale individual assessments (ie. change the average and the spread of marks) before adding them. Secondly, these marks do not reflect "HSC marks". That depends on external scaling after you have done the HSC exams. Thirdly, isn't this all moot, since apparently...

    HSC q16 a ii

I'm not aware of such a place. The idea is to convert the problem into a problem that has the same solution, but which is easier to visualise. There are a multitude of possible scenarios. Has your teacher finished teaching the topic?

    Cambridge Prelim MX1 Textbook Marathon/Q&A

    Re: Year 11 Mathematics 3 Unit Cambridge Question & Answer Thread If you substitute the point (0,y1) into the equation of the parabola, you get y1 = c. So y = ax^2 + bx + y1 Substituting the other points (-h, y0) and (h, y2) gives: y0 = ah^2 - bh + y1 y2 = ah^2 + bh + y1 By alternately...

    HSC q16 a ii

This is about counting the number of ways of distributing 10 identical coins amongst 4 distinguishable boxes. Lay the 10 coins in a line: OOOOOOOOOO Divide them into 4 groupings by placing 3 dividers between them. For example: OOO|OOOO|O|OO means place 3 coins in box A, 4 in box...

    Binomial expansion

There has never been such a question in an HSC exam, due to the ambiguity. They only ask for the coefficient of something, such as the coefficient of x^3. There is no ambiguity then, and each method gives the same answer.

    Binomial expansion

The r in their answer is not the r in the general term formula. I'm guessing they used a different pronumeral in the general term, like k. Assuming it was k, instead of saying n=4k/3, you should be saying k=3n/4. This has to be an integer, and that only happens when n is a multiple of 4, ie...
