Is it possible to be among the best without coaching?

But why do you have to succumb to this pressure? Can't you and your daughter be content with her achieving what she believes is the best that she can achieve? At a selective school you dont have to be within that top 10-20 group of very diligent, hardworking students.

Is it possible to be among the best without coaching?

Hahaha oh dear. Yes, I was on a 100% scholarship, yes two of my friends were on half scholarships. Half of my group was asian (pretty much the only asians in the grade). There was no 'special group of scholarship students' in my cohort - the people I sat with ranged in their abilities, right...

Is it possible to be among the best without coaching?

Why can't you get back into a selective school? Many take in a couple of students each year through interviews, to make up for the numbers when inevitably a few kids drop out. And of course some of them hold entrance exams for entry into yr11. You could also apply for scholarships at another...

Is it possible to be among the best without coaching?

I feel you really have a cynical outlook on this whole situation - I currently attend a selective high school, but prior to that I was in a private school. There was absolutely no tutoring going on there - of course, there would have been for the ocassional student who may have been...

This is how I think ATAR should be calculated.

What made you decide to advanced english over ESL, then? Good luck to you for your HSC though =)

This is how I think ATAR should be calculated.

But even if you rank 2nd, then you'll still be fine! You're not suddenly going to lose all these marks in the HSC. There's nothing at all to be worried about. I would attempt to explain how ranking works but I'd probably stuff up on something and then everyone would get mad lol. But chill, its...

Is it possible to be among the best without coaching?

Elite private schools? I really can't think of what schools you are referring to. Also, if your child is in this group of 'prized' students, cant she just as easily drop out and return to a normal class with the rest of her cohort where such high expectations aren't placed on her?
  8. Thief

This is how I think ATAR should be calculated.

Well obviously they ranked first because they did better than you in the other assessments, which is fair and they deserve the advantage.

This is how I think ATAR should be calculated.

Nope. What happens if you stress out and bomb the exams on the day? Does this mean that all the effort you may have put in prior to the HSC will go to waste? Regarding the grouping of subjects, what if a student doesn't want to stick to a certain set of subjects but would rather do 1-2 from...

Is it possible to be among the best without coaching?

So is your child on a scholarship, if you don't mind me asking? Maybe it might be better if she was at a normal school without this pressure?
  11. Thief

    Which school??

Why cant you get good results with happiness? What's to say you can't just self study?
  12. Thief

    Why!

Well rightly so, the whole point of the assessment is to answer the question they give you. Preparing an essay beforehand and then just regurgitating that wont get you anywhere =) But yes OP, if the average was only 8, then getting a 3/20 seems more justifiable. Your intro was very wordy, and...

Is it possible to be among the best without coaching?

I feel a bit confused. Obviously if a student has a life and doesn't spend all of his/her time studying, then they wont match up their marks to the extremely smart and dedicated students who do spend all their time studying. It is very possible for a student to self-learn, yes, but they...

    Year 10 to 11

Oh. Well then lol. OP just apply for as many selective schools in your area as you can and hope for the best! Good luck
  15. Thief

Is anyone else struggling to stay focused...?

Or just get y without bothering with x :p

    Year 10 to 11

Lol I got into my current school without stellar report marks. @OP if Baulko has an entrance exam and you ace that, then youll get in even if your report isnt the best.

    Subject Selections for year 11?!

A fair few people drop ext english and pick up 4u maths. I would personally drop physics, thats my worst. But you might come to change your mind during the school year - I know I sure did, I originally was going to keep Physics and drop modern history, but I really ended up not liking Physics...

Going to be short of 91 atar?

Yes, you spend two semesters working - and I think you can choose when to take them, although not in first year. And UNSW doesn't have that so their engineering degrees are a year shorter.

So if you get over that on your next exams, then you'll be guaranteed a B!
