You can survive the first 1 or maybe even two weeks with out the books. However i warn you the lines for the coop book shop at this time of the semester are huge. They have a hired bouncer, it feels like i am trying to get into a club or something.

I never bought the recommended further reading books. Just buy the compulsary stuff and you'll be fine. The lecturer doesn't use the secondary material, so it's for your own use. I personally found that i don't have enough time even if i wanted to get the secondary material.
