    Simple esterification question

When describing a procedure to prepare an ester by refluxing, it is important that the source of heat be a hotplate (instead of a Bunsen burner)? It is apparently too dangerous to use a Bunsen burner, due to the volatility and flammability of the alkanol, and the naked flame of the burner. I...

Is the new fitzpatrick book enough?

As I've said before on this forum, personally I reckon the new Fitz book is awesome - however, there's no harm in getting another textbook or two to complement what you're learning from Fitz. I recommend Terry Lee. However, actually understanding the concepts is more important than simply...

1998 HSC AM-GM inequality induction proof

I was doing the 1998 HSC for Extension 2 and this question popped up. Parts (i) and (ii) were easy but (iii) is a lot more tricky. The marking notes explicitly state that the inequality in (ii) must be used, but I can't seem to figure out exactly how it should be used. Can someone help with this...

    Reflection property

Make sure you are aware of this property (as you obviously are) - it popped up in the 2011 HSC without an explanation for what it actually is. The BOS were allowed to do this because it is explicitly mentioned in the syllabus. It can be proved myriad ways: 1. Using sine rule and then ratios of...

    dummy variables

Think about it this way: if we have a function f(x), and we wish to find the area between the curve and x-axis between x=0 and x=a, then surely the area wouldn't be different if we switched the label 'x' with the label 'u'? The label 'x' is simply an arbitrary symbol; it could be anything, e.g...

On a side note, can anyone link me to some past trial papers from different schools? I am severely lacking in them. Thanks :)

HSC 2015 MX2 Integration Marathon (archive)

Re: MX2 2015 Integration Marathon Could you pls link me to an image (or something) of that? LaTeX images are stuffing up for me on my computer atm, all I see is a little white/blue/green square. Thx

2014 BOS Trial Extension 2 Exam Results Thread

I might consider coming to this year's BOS Trial - a couple of months back I did the 2013 one and got 47% lol, I wonder if I would get a better mark on this year's test

    Tricky probability question

Could someone please help me with this question? The answers say 2/7, but they aren't very enlightening as to why this is the case. Thanks :)

    2015ers Chit-Chat Thread

If you're asking "do you have memorised analysis for heaps of other characters", then no, but I (of course) have some quotes memorised that could link to other characters (e.g. "take Claudius in the purging of his soul" I could link to the dramatic tension created when Claudius tries to pray...

    2015ers Chit-Chat Thread

Yeah, my essay is basically just a very loose structure which I can change in order to adapt. e.g. for your school's question, for the first paragraph I would compare Hamlet's inaction before act 5 to Laertes ("the drop of blood that's calm proclaims me bastard") and then for the 2nd paragraph...

    2015ers Chit-Chat Thread

I've basically got 2 paragraphs in my essay, one of them examines Hamlet's vacillation before Act 5 whereas the other explores Hamlet afterwards. I haven't got whole paragraphs planned for each individual idea/theme, but I have a good idea of how I would adapt my pre-existing essay to a question...

    2015ers Chit-Chat Thread

This was literally me like 3 days ago. Best if you take a few days off for a break; it's better to try and recover quickly rather than push yourself, otherwise you'll end up taking like 1-2 weeks to fully recover
