I agree. I always write my essays on the spot... couldn't deal with memorising one. Yeah, they should be prepared for anything, instead of relying on getting a predictable or easy paper.

But you can still get decent marks (98+) without studying much. You just have to study the right way. I rarely did homework this year, and my study = about 4 hours worth of work a week, but I'm expecting 98+ (but happy with anything 96+). Study method is more important than study hours. And...

Obviously, very high marks are a prerequisite. They basically look at the top 5 people, consult with their teachers about the amount of effort they've been putting in + consistency of marks and effort, have a look at their past highschool academic performance, and then decide who'll come dux...

Okay, so it worked for you. I'm ranked third and yet I just 'know the ideas', so how do you explain that? From experience, and from observation of people I know, I believe it's better to learn quotes/evidence and not memorise a generic essay. I don't find myself pressed for time in coming up...

Maybe that's just because it works for you. Most people that I know who I'd expect to get 95+ for Advanced in the HSC memorise points and not essays, myself included. Those who I'd predict would do 'relatively' well, meaning low band 6s, memorise essays.

But if you write a pre-prepared essay, you're restricting yourself in terms of depth. When I say 'evidence' and 'quotes', I mean 2-3 pages worth per text.

+1 for supporting common sense and fairness. And seeing the actuality of the BOS's fucked-up-ness.

I disagree. Prepared responses aren't as effective as learning quotes/evidence etc. as points and then, during the exam, specifically mentally selecting ones which contribute to a solid answer to the question.

I beg to differ. Our dux did not get the highest marks this year (although she's topped in other years), but she definitely put in the most effort. Dux at our school is a reward for effort which has resulted in very high - but not necessarily the highest - marks.

lol yeah I see what your point is, I just thought that it was a bit of a generalisation to make. Mine's a top 20 school too, and so making comparisons with my own cohort is always a bit different to making them with the state as a whole. Most people at my school, as far as I'm aware, just rote...
