Warren's book was very good imo. Bloody useful when combined with Webb's booklet. For the rest of historians, we received excerpts from their books and deconstructed them in class.
Depends on the subject really. For some subjects such as the sciences, I found making summaries quite useful. For the humanities/maths, I found that practising essays and past paper questions respectively were more productive. I don't recall making any summaries through a collective effort, but...

Well there'll always be different ways in which you will able to obtain a 'band 6'. Just simply following advice isn't going to guarantee you one - you have to put in the hard yards as well.
With Standard English, in general, practise. Practise your essays continuously, refine them and adapt...
