oasfree, the selective schools test does not require algebraic thinking. in fact, i didnt even learn algebra until about year 8. if you actually have an answer, your not allowed to use algebra to prove it because people in the test shouldnt need to use algebra in order to solve the problem.

the hsc is an average between the modified ass. mark and the exam mark. so in the case above, the student who came last in that situation would have received (0+70)/2 = 35, which is indeed unfair. BUT that would have been modified slightly upwards in the ass. mark. So give them >35. but...
