    Law textbooks

Re: legal text books Yes, you will be "safe". And yes you must get the prescribed textbooks. That's why they're prescribed!

    Law textbooks

Re: legal text books I never used to read additional law books. But I have found in later years that using additional books that are not required can be immensely helpful. I would definitely recommend looking at extra texts. Different texts can explain things more clearly in different areas, and...

    Leave of absence

Re: Leave Of Absence Help This is the sort of issue that you should discuss with the faculty directly. Give them a call asap.

How to address professors and tutors

Pretty much every lecturer I've ever had, both at USyd and UNSW, were most comfortable being addressed by first name. If you are writing a formal letter or application to them then obviously use their full title, if they have one (eg. Professor Zines). But if you're just talking to them in class...

Which is the best uni for business/commerce/economics?

Re: which uni for the best for business and commerce? Sensible people go to university primarily to become qualified to enter the career they want. "Lifestyle" and "excitement" are clearly secondary and ancillary priorities for most people, as they should be.

corporate law - without doing commerce?

A commerce degree will make you more attractive to a corporate law firm than an Arts degree (or another non-Commerce degree), yes. The extent of this "boost" is not great however. And it only affects the situation when all else is equal, which it never is. Your law marks count for more than...

    Too many lawyers?

If the weather is sunny, why is John Howard bald? I don't understand the relevance of a high UAI and a good demand for lawyers..

    Too many lawyers?

Re: Too many laywers? Well there is not an overpopulation of lawyers, I don't know how you formed that conclusion. And as was mentioned above, there is a hell of a lot of movement in the legal sector, both between law firms and between firms and in-house legal practices within businesses...

    BCom/LLB - Career paths & popularity

Not 100% sure what you mean there but you can definitely take a year "off" to do Honours in between 3rd and 4th year law. My goal is to become a barrister, practicing in commercial and possibly administrative law. (Although I'm aiming to work in a commercial law firm for a few years first)

Masters of Law (LLM at USyd)

I am actually looking at doing an LLM at USyd myself, if I don't get a clerkship or a judge's associateship. Some info: Masters takes 1 year full-time, 2 years part-time. You can only do it once you have completed your LLB. Sydney has 4 subjects per semester for its LLM. Masters is harder than...

    How did you get in?

Non-recent school leaver. Recent school leavers are those who are applying to university after finishing the HSC. Non-recent school leavers are those who have spent some time at university and are transferring. The NRSL cut-offs are different from the RSL cut-offs.

    How did you get in?

I just checked the FOI Act and unfortunately it seems that universities are exempt for such matters: So there goes that idea.

Some general questions for everyone re: Uni life BEWARE may take some time to answer!

Re: Some general questions for everyone re: Uni life BEWARE may take some time to ans Most people start uni in the year they turn either 18 or 19. So you won't be out of place. Applications open in August of each year for a March start date. There are limited places available for mid-term...

    How did you get in?

I'm actually consulting someone about that at this very moment :) I shall let you know. If we do it, I think it would be worth getting all courses NRSL cut-offs for the past 5 years, to give people a good idea of their chances.
  16. MoonlightSonata

    How did you get in?

The NRSL cut-off certainly does vary from year to year, sometimes significantly. Unfortunately UNSW has been quite reluctant to release them. If your friend gained entry with a GPA of 5.625 and a UAI of 97, then yes, the maximum NRSL cut-off it could have been last year would have been 95...

    Law degree workload

Also note that the average in arts is not an HD grade either -- attaining high grades at university level is far more difficult than the HSC, or a uni-HSC course.
  18. MoonlightSonata

    Law degree workload

The average mark in law is far less than that I'm afraid! Here are some past grade distributions at UNSW from the first semester of 2006. You can see the percentage of people attaining each grade. Each grade's cut-off is: HD = 85+ D = 75-84 C = 65-74 P = 50-64

    BCom/LLB - Career paths & popularity

Yeah they only have a single ceremony at the end. I think USyd has separate ones
  20. MoonlightSonata

    How did you get in?

I should note that the UNSW Law Faculty has since changed it statements regarding competitiveness -- a UAI of 97 and a D average being generally required. More information on the exact calculations and chances of transferring is available in detail here.
