    acturial anybody?

    Actuarial studies sucks... do Law+Maths

    Comparison of Math

it often helps to write trigonometic functions in the forms: cos(x) = [e^ix + e^-ix] /2 sin(x) = [e^ix - e^-ix]/2i the are other specific examples but it's a bit late at night

    Comparison of Math

you need to read more then, the two points I was refering to was: 1.) it was useless 2.) there aren't any mistakes

    4u peeps.

you shouldn't need to study for 2U if you are performing at 4U level

Don't believe him on either point.

    Comparison of Math

    1) depends on the way one approaches mathematics. It happens that 3U doesn't really differentiate between rote learners and those who think. For those who think 4U is not that much harder. 2) depends on your school/difficulty of paper

I have an exam this Tuesday and

the book's probably cheaper.. and it's easier for the teacher..

    Tutoring for 3U

It's not that hard to judge a tutor... you can usually tell if they know what they are on about.

    Complex numbers so complex

{-1,1} is closed under multiplication but not addition, {0} is closed under multiplication and addition {-1} is not closed under either operation (you don't say open) Yeah.. the 2kpi is there to get the principal argument, for example, if you take arguments to be between -pi to pi, then...

    Death Conics

90% of questions on conics in the HSC are quite straight forward (but long) say, prove that some line and some other line are perpendicular, or find the locus of the midpoint of something. and almost all of these results in a series of long calculations. Compared to polynomials, geometry and...

    Rubics Cube

    what about 2 corners? 1 corner + a side

    Death Conics

Conics is not very demanding conceptually... it's about how fast and patient you are with simplifying long expressions.

    How Seriously...

    I find it more natural to see it this way: a^4 + (a^2)(b^2) + b^4 = (a^6 - b^6)/(a^2 - b^2) = (a^3 - b^3)(a^3 + b^3)/(a+b)(a-b) = (a-b)(a^2 + ab + b^2)(a+b)(a^2 - ab + b^2)/(a+b)(a-b) = answer. it's interesting too in that one expands the set of objects under consideration for the...

    Help Me Factorise~!~@#@!

yeah... and that's basically how the cubic formula was derived.

    Orthodox format

whatever you think is appropriate. I think the rule of thumb is that it should read like a sentence if you replace the symbols by words.

    Help Me Factorise~!~@#@!

    made a hiccup, got the expansion wrong not u^3 - v^3 + 3uv(u-v) + 3(u-v) + 2 = 0 should have been u^3 - v^3 - 3uv(u-v) + 3(u-v) + 2 = 0 so infact want u^3 - v^3 = -2 uv = 1 u^6 + 2u^3 - 1 = 0 which is a little nasty :P you get u^3 = 1+/- sqrt(2) proceed from there.
  17. Affinity

    Help Me Factorise~!~@#@!

yeah the cubic equation would do the trick.. or if you understand how the equation was derived, you would notice that the cubic does not have the sqaure term (which reduces the formula) so just let x = u-v and proceed: u^3 - v^3 + 3uv(u-v) + 3(u-v) + 2 = 0 so if we can let u^3 -...

Regarding long division for rational algebraic expressions

    you write x^2 think: -3x^2 - (-2 + i)x^2 then: -(1 + i) x ^2 + 2x and continue to write: x^2 -(1+i) x think 2x - (1+i)(2-i)x = 2x - (3 +i)x = -(1 + i)x [the only thing you really need to do here is the multuiplication, which is not that bad] again bring down the next term, think -(1+i)x...

Regarding long division for rational algebraic expressions

the best way is to do it in your head... it's not as difficult as it seems because you write down your quotient as you go.
