    Random L&R Story thread

Dude just chill out. As I said before, don't make things so complicated. 99% of girls won't bite and are nice. You do get the occasional nasty ones though.

    Random L&R Story thread

Lol, good relationships (of the opposite sex) need trust, and trust is only earned over time. For some it takes less time, for others it takes a while. Also, sometimes they want to be friends with you. Other times you need to be the one to step out and get to know them. For example, some girls...

Could someone please tell me how to calculate the standard deviation on a calc?

    Just use the formula. Not that hard... \sigma = \sqrt{\frac{1}{n-1} (\sum_{k=1}^n x_k^2 - n\bar{x}^2)}...

    CSSA MX2 Trial

The pi^2/6 result can also be proved using Complex Analysis. Quite neat I think.

    boxplot

None of the NSW syllabi for its maths courses contain statistics. Hence you are not getting many responses. I'll reply later when I can be bothered to answer these questions...

    HSC 2012 MX2 Marathon (archive)

Re: 2012 HSC MX2 Marathon Probably using e^(i x^2) = cos (x^2) + i sin (x^2) and treat i as a constant and take the real and imaginary parts. But yes, the complex analysis way is quite elegant I think.

    Complex Numbers for + Rep

That depends on the question. Most markers will probably know what 'cis' means. It's very common in textbooks. Euler's rule is definitely not in the current syllabus, although it probably should be. Also, most markers probably wont know euler's rule (compared to 'cis') as it is not that common...

Extension 2 subject selection for year 12

I don't think Ext 2 circle geometry q's are THAT hard... most of them just involve cylic quadrilaterals. Once you see it (the cylic quad) then you can prove the required result quite easily.

4U Decision: Please provide any advice you can give

In 2009 a raw mark of 60 or so was scaled to around 80. I don't think that's "average scaling" IMO... In regards to 4U maths, if you can answer the following question correctly then you should do 4U: Solve for x: |x+1| = -5

WARNING to all students look for tutors. Most are greeedy, too expensive.

Lol, it's all to do with opportunity costs.

Are we are allow to use L'Hospital's Rule for lim question

Lol, I was just showing an alternative method. Taylor series (and any series in fact -- including loan repayments) is my favourite topic in maths. Probably why I loved complex analysis in university (the last section involving residues is basically all taylor series).

Are we are allow to use L'Hospital's Rule for lim question

    Another way is the taylor series expansion. ie. sin x / x = (x-x^3/3!+x^5/5!- ....) / x = 1 - (x^2/3!-x^4/5!+...) It is clear that if you set x->0 then sin x / x -> 1.

Are we are allow to use L'Hospital's Rule for lim question

Probably not. Otherwise it'd be in the syllabus.

    Integral of 0

    Uhh, usually when I evaluate something like 3 \int x \ dx I write that it =3(x^2/2) + C ...
  15. C

    Integral of 0

    Guys, I think you are overcomplicating things... Simply, \int^b_a 0 \ dx = 0 \int^b_a k \ dx = 0 In the case of indefinite integrals, \int 0 \ dx = 0 \int k \ dx = 0 + C = C

    HSC 2012 MX2 Marathon (archive)

Re: 2012 HSC MX2 Marathon Uhh, it is. I get what people are saying about creativity etc. But my point is that sometimes the easiest way is to work backwards using iff arguments. Also if you square both sides of an inequality (or equation) then iff doesn't hold.

    HSC 2012 MX2 Marathon (archive)

    Re: 2012 HSC MX2 Marathon Okay then try this: \text{If } a_k= \frac{2^k}{(3^k +1)k} \text{ show } a_k \ge a_{k+1} \text{ for integers } k \ge 1

    HSC 2012 MX2 Marathon (archive)

Re: 2012 HSC MX2 Marathon Well, that's the easiest way to prove some inequalities.

    1st Year Maths

Re: Complete Guide to 1st Year Uni Weird. All my friends found it to be easy (because it's just applying formulae blindly...) I found it to be really boring. But I really did enjoy Complex Analysis and Several Variables Calculus which my friends hated...

    HSC 2012 MX2 Marathon (archive)

    Re: 2012 HSC MX2 Marathon x2 + y2 > 2xy iff x2 - 2xy + y2 > 0 iff (x-y)2 > 0, which is true for all real x,y ... Nothing wrong with that I don't think...
