Are graduate diplomas considered valuable (stand-alone) degrees?

In terms of general research excellence, UNSW and USyd are the most reputable in Sydney, followed by places like Macquarie and UTS. Based on what other people have said on forums, it doesn't really matter past a certain point i.e. as long as you don't go to somewhere obscure. UNSW is said to...

    double vs single degree?

I confess that I've never seen the word before outside of mathematics. I assumed it was related to monotony, which, considering the context of the thread, I construed as "graduates are all the same (hence monotonous) - you need something to stand out". In hindsight, it could also have referred...

    double vs single degree?

That really doesn't help me at all in theoretical physics research. That's ok though, I'm more than happy to spend an extra year at uni doing something I'm passionate about. And no, the workload is not higher in combined degrees.

TSP for Bachelor of Science (Adv) at UNSW or USYD?

Actually you might get in to USyd TSP. I was told at the Open Day that they are somewhat flexible with the requirements. Rural + International Competition would probably be worth something. Just make sure you get in contact with them and tell them about it, or else they won't know. You can also...

    double vs single degree?

It doesn't have to be about jobs. Will an Arts degree help me be a better phycisist? Absolutely not! Am I going to do it anyway? Hell yeah, Philosophy is awesome!

    double vs single degree?

Taking a double degree would probably make you more employable. Depends on what you study. However, it will take longer to complete. Remember that you can still go into masters/honours after the combined degree is done though. If you like both Science and Engineering but haven't really got a...

Are graduate diplomas considered valuable (stand-alone) degrees?

Depends what Diploma it is then. If the subject is related to engineering (but not the exactly the same subject as your master's, obviously. That would just be redundant.) then it would almost definitely make you more employable. e.g. If I had a masters in Psychology, a diploma in neuroscience...

Are graduate diplomas considered valuable (stand-alone) degrees?

I think it depends a lot on the subject/career you have in mind. You should check with employers or maybe the careers place at a university. For example, a DipEd would probably be enough to get a job as a teacher, but there's no way a Physics DipSc would get you into academic research.

    Picking preferences trouble please help

http://www.handbook.mq.edu.au/2012/DegreesDiplomas/Degree/Bachelor+of+Science+with+the+Diploma+of+Education There's one more for you, but in all honestly 4 preferences is already enough.

    2012 Open Day thoughts?

I wasn't there for long, but overall, it seemed like a decent day. Lectures were okay, advisory was good, and the new library is nice. As a side note, the website/FAQ is pretty impressive IMO. Also, I spam-printed free coffee coupons. What did everyone else think?

Second major from outside Science faculty?

Wow thanks for the quick and concise reply. I know Macquarie Uni allows students to do an external major, but I'm not sure if I trust its science department enough to choose it over USyd. Oh well, combined degree sounds great as well! Who knows, I might be able to pull some strings with TSP...

Second major from outside Science faculty?

Does anyone know whether this is allowed? In degrees like Business and Arts, you can take an "external" major. I really want to take a major from the Arts faculty as part of a BSc.(Adv.), but I'm really not sure if it will be properly recognised. I know I could just do a combined BA/BSc., which...

    PhB worth moving interstate for?

Shh.... I was trying to get onto her good side. It sounded deep and meaningful at the time, okay? Now it just seems lame. -.- More seriously though, what is this PhB scholarship I keep hearing about?

    Thoughts on UNSW open day?

I really liked UNSW Open Day. I think I even saw one of you at Philosophy. Free stuff was good, advisory centre people were enthusiastic and informative, Physics and Adv. Sci lectures were nice. A particular standout for me was the Computer Science lecture by Richard Buckland. That guy seemed...

    PhB worth moving interstate for?

Yeah, not sure if... Anyway, I just don't want to go there are then realise I can't actually afford it. That would be an amusing scenario. Wealth may be trivial to true intellects like us, but unforunately, it makes the world go 'round.

    PhB worth moving interstate for?

I apologize if I gave you the wrong impression, but I do take my studies seriously, I and most certainly want to pursue a career in research. It's just that there are undeniable negatives to moving interstate; I was merely asking experienced individuals for any advice they may have. I don't see...

    PhB worth moving interstate for?

Do any current/former students have any advice for a sydney-sider? It seems that there are lots of advantages to the PhB and ANU in general-the independence, the reputation, the research (especially since I'm looking at a career in physics research), and the supposedly calmer atmosphere. On the...
