i think a lot of people over thought this question. it was a one mark question in an sc exam. the 1^3 + 2^3 ... + n^3 would have been fine since they used a similar notation to describe the squares the previous page.

^no, not at all. that doesn't even work for n=1.

the ellipses indicate you continue until you reach whatever number n is. Therefore if n is two you just go up to the two. It's just a general expression. You won't be wrong for writing it like that.
