yep, using b^2 = a^2(1-e^2) has absolutely no other purpose except to make the working a bit neater.

chemistry and physics nowdays require a VERY MINIMAL level of maths, so u'll be fine as long as u know ur yr 10 (or even lower ) maths well.

ya, but be aware that there was a +/- sign throughout which eventually cancels out.. but i dunno if they'll mark u down if u dont write it.
