It was ATAR at my school. However, some schools award an ATAR-based and also an internally-based DUX, which in my opinion is probably fairer since the ATAR is determined by scaling & aligning etc which can lead to distortion of marks.

as Rafy has correctly said below, you wont get notified if you're 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th etc... only 1st. you will need to check the top achievers in course list which will be uploaded on BOS (the real board of studies site) at about 4pm, so have a look there! :)
