I go to a school that is ranked somewhere around 100 ( The highest atar last year was 99.7 but no 99.95 in the past few years).
These are my scores and Ranks from year 11 (the rank may not be super accurate since we haven't confirmed some of them)
  • 3U Maths - 75 (Rank 24/70)
  • 3U English - 80 (No rank given)
  • 2U Maths - 88 (Rank 19/100~)
  • 2U English - 92 (Rank 1/ ~100)
  • Physics - 65 (Rank 13/50)
  • Software Engineering - 89 (Rank 2/24)
  • Legal Studies - 91 (Rank 2/ ~50)
  • Economics - 87 (Rank 6/~55)
I know for a fact I will keep Legal Studies and Economics. 3U English I messed up one assesment task hence the lower grade compared to 2U, and same with Economics.
My prospect for dropping is between Physics and Software Engineering. I enjoy both subjects and am willing to put in effort for both but keeping 14 units is too much work to me and hence I want to drop to 12 units. What should I drop?

To make a more informed decision, I would recommend gathering some information that can provide you with an idea of the potential of your cohort. Specifically, you should check your school's past HSC cohort performance in your subjects, i.e. the number of band 6s/E4s achieved at your school in each of your subjects. You can do this on HSCninja.

While past cohort performance has no direct effect on the level of performance of your cohort, it can help you shape your expectations regarding your cohort's potential in the subjects that you are thinking of dropping. If, for example, you find that the number of band 6s achieved at your school in Physics has typically been lower than Software Engineering, you may wish to consider dropping Physics, especially if your rank in Software Engineering is favourable (which seems to be true here). In this particular case, Software Engineering is not a good example since it is still new, but the approach itself is valid and will become valid for subjects like Software Engineering in the next few years once multiple HSC cohorts have sat their HSC exams. As such, it would be good to wait until HSC results are released so that you can become aware of your school's HSC cohort's performance in Software Engineering (which you can then compare to Physics).

However, if we were to solely consider your rank/mark in each subject, it appears that your performance is clearly more favourable in Software Engineering. With that being said, only you know your circumstances best, including whether you strongly believe that you can improve significantly in Physics to the point where you should keep it.

I hope this helps! 😄

drop software "engineering", it's probably worse than hsc physics lol. based on my knowledge of hsc subjects, ur just gonna be answering "how have computers improved the lives of human beings" atleast with physics there are some actual questions

Thank you for your advice. For this, I know roughly top 8 people in Physics get a band 6, while for my other subjects, my rank is high enough to get Band 6.The only uncertain subject is Software because it is new, and Physics, because my rank is lower.

No worries. You are not very far from that indicative band 6 range in Physics, so if you strongly believe that you can improve in Physics in year 12, that is, to a level that matches or exceeds your current performance in Software Engineering, then Physics may be a safer option.

Another important element to consider is whether either subject may be relevant to your studies beyond the HSC.

Software Engineering in my experience has been more practical based than social impact based. Scaling is probably going to be pretty bad considering it isn't a particular difficult subject imo compared to physics. However the scaling of a subject shouldn't be your deciding factor on what to drop. I'd probably recommend to do whatever you enjoy more and what you are more interested in learning (pretty useless answer i know haha). Then again, whatever you do drop can always be explored again in the future if you ever decide to go down that route.
