help, I got my physics rank on friday for the first assessment and i cant stop thinking about how i much fucked upppppp. my rank is 46/48 😭😭😭 I go to a top 40 school so it's not as bad as it could be but still. this task was weighted at like 20% or 25% I think

how much do ranks matter at a top 40 school?? is a comeback still possible or am I monumentally cooked😔 and does it matter if u fail an assessment in yr12??

The whole ATAR calculation process is extremely complicated. I'd previously assumed that school assessment ranks made up half of your final HSC mark, but then my teacher told me that your actual HSC exam mark is more important so I can't be sure. It's definitely the case that your later marks matter more than your earlier ones, though.

Either way, although it's probably not best to be ranking 3rd last in any subject, you've definitely got room to improve your rank drastically. Assuming that your school rank accounts for half, then your 1st assessment task would probably account for around 10-12.5% (depending on if the weighting is 20 or 25%). If you think about it this way, say if you got 60% on the first assessment and the weighting is 20%, then you'd get 12 of the 20% and only lose 8 marks from your final school assessment mark. You can work with that. The question is, how far apart was your mark from the average? If the marks are pretty tight, you've got an even better chance. Remember that the ranking is what matters, not your marks.

well I failed the test, I got 17/42 which is well below the average of around 29/30, but yeah the marks are pretty close together until u get to like the bottom 15 ranked people. so many people had the same rank because they got the same mark, like I think 6 people got rank 11 and 9 people got rank 18.

i can drop physics as i have 12 units but I need it for the uni courses I want to do, so I guess I could keep it and even if my rank doesn't improve much, it wouldn't have much of an effect on my atar, right? since it will most likely be the subject I perform the worst in?

Hmm yeah, but the average isn't that high either so you could certainly catch up

And yeah, it wouldn't affect your ATAR at all if it ends up being your worst subject, but the time you spend on it might affect your performance in other subjects. If it's gonna help you in uni though, I'd say it's worth it, and if you achieve growth in the subject throughout your HSC year then even better
