A few days ago the conservative LNP won power in Queensland, defeating the three-term Labor government. David Crisafulli is now Queensland’s new premier.

A far-right party called KAP wants to introduce an abortion laws repeal bill which will recriminalise abortion.

Given that 93% of the LNP voted against legalising abortion in 2018, it’s almost certain that the LNP will vote in favour of the bill, and abortion could be banned in Queensland by the end of the year. Crisafulli himself is opposed to abortion.

Even MPs in the LNP directly say they want to repeal abortion laws

It’s hard to think that such a big step backwards on abortion rights could actually happen. I feel for the people who could be affected by this having fewer options for their health is a serious issue.
Agreed - what if a woman if pregnant with a female bundle of cells instead of a strong boy who will grow up to bring honour to his family? Now what are they supposed to do? Accept a useless daughter??

saw bros name on the abortion thread and IMMEDIATELY knew he would say sm about ppl w down syndrome 😭😭
nah but seriously I think it would be best to abort a baby with Down syndrome or any other serious disability instead of being burdened with taking care of it your whole life.

My partner and I have already discussed this, but when we try to have kids, if the pregnancy shows down syndrome or some other serious condition, we would terminate immediately. Quite frankly, its a burden to the family in every way for a person that is unlikely to participate in life. The person will also then have to endure the eventuality of being placed into a home, to be cared for by underpaid and underqualified staff. Pass.

As I said in another thread, the abortion issue is absolutely toxic for the LNP - that election was much closer than it should have been because of it. Dutton at a Federal level has already told the Caucus that abortion is not to be touched because he doesn't want to gift Labour an election.

Katter is a smart guy and he is probably using this to get what he really wants out of the government for his electorate (new road, train line, sport centre take your pick). He uses the threat of this to get what he wants out of Crisafulli. The last thing a new Premier wants is his entire agenda hijacked by a fringe issue that will kill him in the next election. It wont happen.

i can understand but you do understand that not everyone will feel the same right? not everyone will see a child with down syndrome as a burden and want to abort them and not everyone with children with down syndrome/life threatening illnesses will be placed into a home, they could have other children or extended family that can take care of them as well? you are pretty much applying the worst case scenario to every single case and to other people's lives as well.

you don't know for sure that parents of ill children or children reliant on the parents for life are "enduring" their children. i personally know someone with a child with an intellectual disability that needs constant attention and support in most ways, and they would be horrified to hear their child being called a burden on the family. you can think whatever you want but once you make the conscious choice to have the child and keep them you accept with that the responsibility of care for as long as you are able, and passing on that responsibility someone after that, whether that be another caretaker or else. it is not seen as a burden, it is seen as responsibility. if you are not able to see an ill child that way that's your opinion

its nobody's business what you choose but the stuff about "its a burden on the family in every way" is problematic bc it perpetuates a slippery slope fallacy and supports disgusting people with disgusting arguments like "people with down syndrome don't deserve to live, they should all be aborted bc they are a burden on the family/government" even if that is not your intention. and bc you worded that last part as "its a burden to the family" vs "i think its will be a burden on my family", it sounds less general and allows for your words to be misconstrued. im not saying you can't say any of that im saying make sure you word it so ppl don't interpret it and take it as a sign to start spewing hate and offensive messaging on this site

To each their own, hence why it's called pro-choice. Ive had a few severely disabled relatives (both mentally and physically combined) and I just wouldnt want that for my family. I wouldn't want my energy devoted to a child who will never have a life at the expense of other normal children who have a chance. I understand your sentiment and I respect your resolve, but Im ruthless with these things.

It's fine if they ban abortion, unless they ban it for rape and babies with down syndrome
ur saying this cuz you get no puss and cannot fathom your s/o falling pregnant accidentally
everyone should be able to abort their child no matter what?? i accept past like a certain number of weeks its not okay (like idk personally i'd say 12)
what if the baby will kill the mother?? what if shes sick or not financially able to take care of the kid? they'll go into a foster system and likely get abused?

Why on earth are you assuming that ppl with Down syndrome cannot eat, walk, talk, work, contribute to society, learn. ???
as someone who has family members with Down syndrome, this couldn’t be further than the truth. No they won’t need to be placed into a home, no it’s not a burden on my family.

why? what if things change, what if it becomes dangerous for the parent or they suddenly lose income and cant afford to take care of the child after those 12 weeks? just curious

sorry, i worded that badly, i think most cases it should be 12 weeks !
obviously in those cases it shouldn't necessarily be like that
but i honestly draw the line completely at around 20 weeks
i might be bias because i was born at 24-26 weeks (i cant remember exactly soz), but atp the child is way past being just a insentient clump of cells

but how is it a child if it is not born yet? and how does being sentient change your opinion? bc legally infanticide is after they have been born so you can't even call abortion after 20 weeks infanticide

and if you say the fetus can survive outside the womb at that point how would you be able to determine that medically, considering there are complications to delivering a fetus that early? here is my source

Abortion is murder, there's no denying that, but allow it under special circumstances such as: rape, risk of death to mother, down syndrome/disabled.
