let me give you point by point advice based on what you just said

This is the thing, in Earth (what I need to switch from) I am getting relatively good marks 90%+ and am finding it relatively easy (I just had to sit a test for it, found it alright). I also don't mind the class, its pretty fun, but I would definitely rather do chem as I am more interested in it.

• let me remind you y11 doesnt count towards your hsc, what you get this year and what you will potentially get this term doesnt matter at all. imo you getting a 90+ in earth shouldn't influence your decision bc if you are willing to put in the work you'll get that same 90+ in chem. also marks you get in y11 dont directly correlate with marks you may get in y12.
• yes earth is easier than chem but it will scale significantly worse than chem. what that means is that unless you would have to get higher raw marks in earth to get the same scaled mark or contribution to your atar that chem will give you for a worse mark. ultimately scaling wont matter if you get a high mark in earth but if you bomb earth you'll be dragged down worse. you can see for yourself on this site: https://hscscalinggraphs.au/ i did some extra research and it aligns with 2023 uac data that was released so im assuming its fairly reliable.
• im accelerating a subject rn and trust me if you don't like your subjects youll find it crazy hard to put in the work in y12. not sure about earth in particular but in sciences in general you won't cope in y12 by just cruising by, it will be more work and it will be probably be less fun. and liking a subject is not mandatory to do well in it but boy does it help.
• i had the same conflict when i was choosing between bio and physics. i didnt have to study at all for any bio related exams in y10 and bombed my physics ones (for context in y10 we covered actual y11 module stuff so thats why im making that comparison). but i fucking hated bio and liked physics a lot more. i ended up taking physics and even tho im struggling a bit rn i think its worth it bc im not miserable learning about germs and plants and what not and i dont have any regrets. what i mean to say by telling you this whole story is that do what you like better bc clearly if you are someone who likes chem enough to catch up 2 terms of work for a chance to take it, i am willing to bet that youll regret not taking the opportunity.

At the moment Im really scared, because joining Chemistry, I am gonna lose my good marks in Earth and am not guaranteed to do well in Chemistry which would really negatively effect me.

• you're not guaranteed to do well in earth either. perfectly valid to think you might not do as well in chem as you did in earth but tbh chem is harder than earth. say you go from getting a 90 in earth to a 70 in chem. the mark isnt the same but if you consider the spread of marks within your cohort a 70 in chem might be just as impressive as a 90 in earth. yeah i also know that the sudden decrease in marks might also be disheartening but remember your learning curve will look a lot different to th kids in your chem classes. it is possible to catch up tho and it is possible to do well.
• my best advice to you is do chem and just forget about this terms mark and focus on getting the content down, catching up etc. like i said y11 doesnt contribute to your atar and if you get some work in this term you will catch up to and be on the same level as your chem cohort and then you can start fresh in y12.
• based on what youve been saying about passing this chem exam without going to any lessons, even beating some of the kids in your grade etc. i reckon you might be seriously underestimating your own abilities. i would never DREAM of doing anything like what youve just done and i was near the top of my cohort in a selective school for chem assessments before y11. you have some talent or drive or whatever it is but its seriously incredible and i think you're really smart.

Also, while catching up on the chemistry content is possible, I am really scared its gonna really negatively effect my other subjects as Im not gonna be able to put enough time into them, studying chem most of the time.

• you genuinely dont need to sit down and cover each and everything that your chem classes have covered, you can def catch up on chem AND have enough time for the rest of your subjects. find out what is going to be in your prelim, and find out what y12 chem looks like. and then only focus on content thats on your prelim and links to stuff done in y12. you will find that youve ruled out a lot of content. if youre having trouble with this ask on this forum for help. this should cut your study time down by a lot.

i am overwhelmingly pro-chem. i totally get the fear of flopping and not feeling qualified enough to do a subject. i was dropping below average marks and decided to apply for extension english for fun. i got in and went to every single lesson feeling like i was the worst student in the class. sometimes it is just your mind playing tricks on you though and often you will rise to the challenge if you want to do well badly enough.

yeah there are negatives and yeah there are a lot of them but they are hurdles that you can cross with hard work. and in the grand scheme of the hsc this will not affect you as much as you might think it will. like i said, you need to put in the work tho

but yeah it will be more work and more time but youll probably like it more too. and youd most likely be willing to put in hard work if you like the subject better

but yeah anyways i gtg study for trials bye

But tbh after talking with my teachers and everything, pretty much all of them advising me not to do chem, and even my parents recommended me not to do it, I think i might just be better of in earth.
While i know i did commit a large amount of work to chem, I feel joining now may set me up for failure for the rest of my subjects and i could even negatively effect me in the hsc


Currently im getting great marks in most of my subjects and I feel putting chem into the mix would degrade everything , causing my marks for other subjects to plummet as the time and stress commitment with the catch up would be substantial.

Right now I have a high work load, doing Physics ,Economics, Math Extension 1, English Advanced, Modern (gonna drop this no matter what), and obviously earth.
I feel with earth (generally an easier subject) I could focus my time to strengthening my other subjects and really pushing myself on them, (I am currently struggling in physics a bit to get high results which i want). With earth i wouldn’t have to commit to much study and still achieve high marks, therefore allowing me to focus on my harder subjects and especially improve myself in physics and extension math.

The thing is, I have decided i really want to push myself in the hsc, trying to get a 95+ Atar atleast.
If I continue with earth, is this really gonna negatively affect me in the hsc?. Am really scared if i make this decision to stay, earth will destroy my atar goal.

While I do have a passion for chemistry, and maybe I even could catch up, i feel me switching could really cause a hole in my academics.

You have put all this work towards switching to chem, yet now that you are almost at the finish line, you decide to quit and turn back? You know what you want so go for it. Just treat the year 11 as prep for year 12 next term as it doesn’t really matter in the grand scheme. Prove those haters wrong, do chem - - stop overthinking it and just go for it

u can get a 95 atar with straight B5 specially for subjects like eco physics chem bio B6 is not the end of ur atar

My teachers said they are gonna organise f i can make a switch now i believe.
I know i really wanted to switch, but for some reason i kee second guessing myself.

if you got an 84 in chem it would scale to 79.4. if you got a 76 it would scale to 66.6

im using the uac scaling report for that, so not sure how accurate it actually is to atar

also i want to add. this may just be my school and teacher, but also keep in mind its a public school. the assessments for earth tend to be quite time consuming, like not as much as chem or bio, but still on pretty similar levels. so the amount of time you save from earth when compared to chem may not be that much.

im sure youll get great marks in earth but there are very few raw marks you could get that could get you a very high atar contribution bc of scaling. the break even point (the raw hsc mark you can get to get an equal scaled mark) is 97. so if you get below a 97 raw mark in the hsc you can expect to scale down at least a few marks. main reason why a lot of selective schools dont offer earth and a lot of similar subjects is bc they scale bad and even if raw scores are high chances of getting a band 6 are low for the reason i stated above. chems break even point is 86 is so so if you get above that youll get scaled up and get a higher scaled mark.

to be specific to the 90 in earth scenario you gave, a raw 90 hsc mark in earth translated to around 80 scaled mark, while a raw 80 in chem translates to a 74 ish. you can fact check that using uac if youd like. both scale down bc both 90 in earth and 80 in chem are below the break even point.
