Attending a lower-ranked school does not necessarily mean that you will not be able to achieve favourable HSC results or ATAR. Outstanding performance is possible at any school, as long as you demonstrate commitment to your studies throughout year 11 and (more importantly) year 12. Essentially, performing at a high standard at a lower-ranked school that is equivalent to that of a student who attends a higher-ranked school will require you to place as high as possible across your subjects in year 12, which can be done by performing favourably in your school assessment tasks/exams. Subsequently, you will need to thoroughly prepare for your HSC exams in order to perform well in them too. Unlike internal performance, HSC exam performance is not affected by factors such as your school cohort.

In your particular case, you may wish to consider aspects of your school such as facilities, teaching quality and distractions (if applicable). If your school offers good facilities that may be helpful in terms of your studies, as well as good teachers, and if you experience little to no distraction from your peers, then there would be nothing stopping you from performing at a high standard.

Regarding your school rank, Better Education is a website that lists school ranks based on HSC results. However, Whitebridge High School's rank is not published on this website, and there is a "PNO" comment, meaning that permission to publish this school's rank was not obtained. Despite this, we can still determine an approximate rank by considering the school's success rate, which involves determining an approximate total number of HSC exams sat by every HSC student, as well as the total number of band 6's/E4's achieved (this one we know), as follows:

This website states that this school had 77 HSC students in 2023. If we assume that each student took 5 subjects, this would result in 385 exams sat. Therefore:

Based on this, it would be reasonable to suggest that Whitebridge High School is ranked in the 300s.

I hope this helps! :D

I was looking on HSCninja and it's not looking good...
Somehow I feel like I'm at a particularly dropkick high school

Also what is my school ranking??
bro your school has gotten a state rank before, you’ll be fine dw. recently it’s been doing better, but there are a decent amount of years where my school has gotten ZERO band 6s 😭 😭

people don't try / don't care / aren't motivated enough
@iloveeggs this, and being in a low socioeconomic area where people don’t have the time or money to throw away in tutoring and other resources. the demographic of people in my school is (generally, there are exceptions especially in recent years) people looking to do trades, less academic careers, or they don’t have a plan for the future at all. at my school, there’s only really precedent for people getting band 6s if you’re first in the cohort, and even then, it’s never in subjects that are quite difficult (such as english advanced - i don’t think our school has ever gotten one for it), but it also can’t be one that’s too easy or one that’s used to bludge (like math std 1). from what i’ve seen, most of the band 6s we’ve gotten are from maths std 2, music, visual arts, legal studies, and more but i forget. i hate to say it but poor schools are nothing like schools in the city or private/selective schools. it’s a different world entirely.

Yeah i get what you're saying
but I'm ngl most of what you said lines up with at least what i've seen in my year, more than 3/4 of the kids are looking to leave school asap
theres maybe 20 academic students out of 120ish

of course none of this discounts what you're saying here

yeah im curious because this is worlds away from my experience in a selective school. i wouldn't consider myself rich but im incredibly privliedged being so far removed from this type of thing

yeah for sure

going from pretty much one of the worst schools academically in vic to a top 100-200 public school school to a top 200 partially selective its crazy how different the mindsets are, even at a decently ranked public school the environment isn't necessarily conducive to learning and people's focus isn't really on academics. i found that even at a partially selective it felt like everyone was wayyy more focused, like the worst students were leagues ahead of some ppl ik from my prev schools

yup for sure. i actually went to a very low ranked partially selective before my current school and there is a crazy difference. some of the kids there just don't care but others had horrible home environments and a variety of other issues and the school would do nothing to support these kids. my new school isn't that much better in terms of support for crises but kids are so much more privileged in the way that the school does everything to support them academically. like free peer tutoring, great study spaces, enrichment programs and learning based clubs etc. the programs are not the best but they are something at least.

and i noticed a shocking difference between how teachers would treat kids. like in my old school teachers would constantly reprimand us, maybe bc kids in the school had bad behaviour and they expected all of us to be like that. not like teachers in selective schools don't do the same but i was treated so much better. teachers would constantly tell me i did a good job, that i was smart and talented, that i was gifted/"high potential", all for just existing really. my new school also takes pride in good behaviour, good uniform and good attendance and praises us for little things lol. i think that sort of thing really does build kids up.

sorry that probably sounds dumb and makes no sense but i feel like that affirmation really helps. like maybe i wasn't the best kid in my old school, and i really wasn't that motivated but i noticed a huge difference in my behaviour. also i felt seen for the effort that i did put into my academics bc it wasn't lame to be nerdy in a selective school, and in fact id get praised for it. although i must admit nobody really told me i was doing a good job before then so it meant a lot 😭
