hi

I'm not necessarily aiming for DUX or anything, simply an ATAR above 90, however, my cohort is quite distracted and their is the possibility to top the cohort.

However their is this one guy in my class (in ALL my classes) who is suddenly doing extremley well in Physics, Ancient AND English. He wasn't really any comeptiton before but during the first term of year 12 he started 'impressing' all the teachers an now I feel insecure LOL 😭

Just felt like telling you guys 😒

Quick question just for my general knowledge - How many of ya'll are tutored or used to do tutoring for during senior years?

Majority of the people in my cohort take tutoring (although many deny it) and I think it's the main reason they excel. Although I haven't done tutoring for any senior subjects, I was wondering how many people here, do tutoring and whether it helps...

Bonus Q - Do you tell your peers/friends/teachers about taking tutoring or 'hide' it?
depends, sometimes tutoring can motivate students to succeed when they are not very self-motivated and give them resources, in which case it is very helpful. on the flipside, there are a lot of students who have a mindset that they can just attend tutoring and then succeed at their school when this is not the case (especially in english where every school has kinda different expectations and teachings for assessments and content), and then this is where i would say it is not worth it.

personally for me, i attended tutoring briefly at the end of year 10/start of year 11, but it didnt do much for me (also, the tutor told me that my creative piece was like perfect and i got like 10/20 LMAO he was chill though). i found that if i could work at my pace, had to actively seek resources for help online or in textbooks to understand things, and geniunely do everything in my power to suceed and understand that it was better for me rather than just having someone teach me, as i found that my school's teaching was already sufficient. it's nice to have someone who you can ask about a question or concept though, but personally all my teachers were very willing to help out with anything, eg if i was ever stuck in maths and i tried everything i thought i could do, i could just give my teacher a question and she would do it in the downtime between classes/in working lessons. however i know that some students prolly dont have a teacher who will even read over their essays in english at all, in which case having a tutor sounds like a good investment

You may or may not have seen that once before, I had a little rant about this girl in my class who was all of a sudden excelling in Biology and Chemistry which worried the hell out of me. I've gotten results back for both subjects and ended up topping both.

I would say, don't worry about other people and just worry about yourself. A lot of people tend to step up in Year 12 and that's completely normal. The transition from Y11 to Y12 brings a lot of switches in mindsets.

The moment you start concerning yourself with others, the more caught up you get with BEATING THEM, rather than DOING THE BEST YOU CAN. There is a difference between the two. For example, if you just want to beat someone, you'll start being content with achieving marks higher than them which could be like 50/100. Whereas, if you want to do the best you can, you can achieve marks like 90/100.

Don't feel insecure, use it as motivation to prove it to yourself of what you can do!
Thank You 😭

I did tutoring in years 9 and 10 for maths (5.3), but now I'm dropping down to Standard 2 maths so I'll have no tutoring. I was a bit embarrassed to be getting tutoring at first so I didn't tell many people, but I've never intentionally hidden it (and I think it's kinda stupid to hide it also - like, what are you trying to prove??).

But yeah, I'm also doing an accelerated course and did really well in my first assessment with no tutoring, but the reason I did so well is that I had a few one-on-ones with my teacher! Not like scheduled tutoring sessions, but just talking to her while she was on playground duty or even in class when the class is doing doing individual work. It really helped as she's literally the one marking so I can ask her for feedback and while she can't give me full on detailed draft marking, she can give me little pointers which I found insanely useful.

In conclusion: you don't need tutoring to do well from my experience, but make sure you get feedback from your teachers, and don't be afraid to ask questions! Interacting with them is seriously the best thing I've done for my marks.

Do the first lot of Year 12 marks 'really' matter?

I didn't do as well as I wanted in Maths and it's daunting as hell...the wieghting for my tasks was 20% - 35%

Anytime! Feel free to rant whenever too; I can't promise that there won't be judgement because of the amount of trolls on this platform, but there'll always be a few of us here to be of some reassurance! :D
Thank you @AsuTeksu. I'll count on y'all 😊

I mean they matter as much as the weighting says I guess lol. But yeah, you really want to make sure your rank is high (so essentially get good marks but yk...)

It will matter a bit. I can't sugarcoat that. But if you failed your first one, you can absolutely pick yourself back up and do well on the next ones and you won't completely fail or smth.

In conclusion: Yes they matter, but they're not the end of the world! Pick up your game not and you can still get an excellent mark.

ohh 😯 I'm 2nd for Physics and 3rd for Business right now...top three is good I guess?
Yup! Essentially (I'm pretty sure) how it works for internals if your final mark is determined by your overall ranking - it's not just your marks. Say you come third, then you get whatever the third highest overall percentage is... It's a bit confusing but it works out in the end.

Like @its_ace21 said, rank really does matter.

I placed first in Mathematics Advanced but my internal marks were as follows:

Task One : 95/100
Task Two : 26/36
Task Three : 30/36
Task Four : 55/100

I cried over most of them... obviously lol.

Then in HSC, I ended up with a B6 and 93/100

I would say that if you're not first, aim for top three and make sure your marks are up to scratch so that there is somewhere to "fall" when alignment starts coming into play. Otherwise you may be screwed big time...

Investigations are my strength, absolutely loved them!!
I'm not worrying about it, haha, I was just giving an example of how ranks and marks do and don't matter, respectively, in some cases :D
