Just a quick note on the required qualifications to become a PhD student. In the case of someone with a Master's degree wanting to complete a PhD, the requirement of having studied a Master's by research is not university-specific. In addition to Honours, a Master's by research provides appropriate research training (by completing relevant coursework units and a thesis) that makes the student eligible to do research at doctoral level. This means that, unless a Master's by coursework includes a thesis/disseration component, it does not make the student eligible to undertake a PhD.
