does anyone have any mod c or discursive tips? Also if we get a choice is imaginative, discursive or persuasive better - my teacher said discursive because there's like techniques to think about compared to imaginative and I was also thinking of picking persuasive since I struggle with thinking of things to write in discursive without it sounding kind of repetitive and just going in circles without meaning. I also did debating for like 4 years so im familiar with persuasive

For me honestly, I actually never got the concept of what a discursive is, so I quickly scrapped that idea. I personally stuck with creatives as I found them much easier in terms of character development and a storyline which fits will with the question given. But of course, if persuasive is something which interests you because of debating, then go for it if you can see it as your strength.

Definitely go with persuasive if that's what you feel the strongest about. Regarding Mod C creatives, its good to have imagery but make sure to not oversaturate your piece with it. Also remember the piece is simply a vignette and doesn't require a lot of complex actions etc. I read a piece which was amazing and it was literally just about someone getting out of bed.(ofc it was a bit deeper than that) but it goes to show how even just describe a stroll through a park or a dinner with family can be very interesting pieces. For discursives you need to build up your style. Typically I love stream of consciousness writing and it comes to me naturally so that's how I write every discursive. Also remember a discursive is just a discussion, so pick something interesting to you. You can do a funnel from something big to something small or vice versa(like from a quote about sheep to the prevalence of deception within society) or even explore the pros and cons of something. Also quotes, stats, etc are really fun and fresh. Cultural allusions are also a fun time. And for some general mod C reflection tips memorise quotes from your text which you think best exemplify the techniques you decide to use.

Since Ive always thought that theyre looking for complex stories with lots of action, imagery etc etc. But true, the meaning of the story is what truly matters

Yep your story doesn't need to be complex it just needs to have a purpose and show a good use of techniques. Like I literally wrote a story about a guy getting ready for a party for my mod C exam.

Here are some tips for each type of writing that you may be required to incorporate into your Module C response, which will hopefully allow you to choose the type you feel most comfortable with and hopefully provide high-quality responses:

Imaginative writing:

The fact that markers have been exposed to imaginative responses to a high extent has meant that their standards/expectations have also increased. Here are some tips for creative writing:

• Emphasis on the idea and purpose of your piece (which is important). Your idea can be supported by including appropriate literary techniques. Having a thorough understanding of your purpose is important as it assists in determining the audience that your response targets in addition to enhancing your writing style and clarifying your perspective (if applicable).

I'll also include a procedure that may be helpful with respect to writing an imaginative piece:

1. Brainstorm universal ideas that relate to the stimulus and subsequently pick one.
2. Decide what you want to write about in terms of your idea. Find a fresh perspective, or challenge an existing one.
3. Craft your narrative around this, do NOT shoehorn commentary on it. Your focus should be on showing/demonstrating instead of solely telling. Don’t tell the marker in your imaginative piece that this is what you’re trying to say as they should be able to glean this from your narrative, which should naturally explore these ideas.

Discursive writing:

Here are some tips regarding discursive writing:

• Ensure you distinguish it from a persuasive piece. In a discursive piece, you may discuss/explore an idea. You should not favour any particular side (where applicable) as the intention is not to persuade anyone of anything.
• Attempt to categorise discursive pieces if possible. Examples of categories include:
  • Debate/discussion, where you would explore both sides of the debate and presents arguments by each respective side, without showing considerable bias towards a particular perspective. Effectively incorporating linguistic devices is also an important thing to consider.
  • The "exploring" discursive, whereby using an extended metaphor and emphasising a personal voice are essential elements for a good quality response.

Persuasive writing:

Here are some tips regarding persuasive writing:

• Have a clear structure for your persuasive response. This involves
  • Introducing your position. An important thing to consider is that your position should be known as soon as possible within your response.
  • Clearly stating your main points as well as evidence to support those points.
  • Reiterating your position as you finalise your response.

yes they could. The whole purpose of mod c is to try and make you forget everything you've memorised and showcase your eng skills. Mine are non-existent tho loool.

Use this line as an opening of a discursive. In your piece of writing incorporate at least one example of figurative language that you have learned about through your study of the prescribed texts for Module C.

Its on the topic of time but like uniqueusername1 has said earlier they can ask for specific ideas like memory, love, art, appearance vs reality etc. Mod C is designed to counteract memorisation technqiues hence why you should be prepared in some way to tackle a question on the spot.
