So I’m currently starting the beginning of my HSC Pip journey for SAC.

I’m thinking of doing how Barbie Dolls have influenced female body images and expectations over time. Is that a good pip topic and what would my sub topics be? How would I gather research for it, who would I interview??

my other ideas include:
  • How has music affected individuals mentally
  • How siblings affect socialisation/individuals
  • Do TV accurately portray real life

I believe anything related to body image is a bit overdone but any topic can work if you do it well enough. You could try to look at how it was first represented compared to the twenty-first century Barbie doll. A questionnaire and a focus group would work really well. Maybe exploring at the views of young girls and boys then perhaps comparing it to teenagers? (Not too sure about teens but have a think about it.)

How siblings affect socialisation/individuals
Do TV accurately portray real life
These two topics intrigued me.

I suggest creating mindmaps and just brainstorming what you personally think/feel about these topics, then trying to connect it to cross-cultural/generation and the three levels of society (micro/meso/macro).

Hope that helps :)

I’ve also thought about how Disneys portrayal of “damsels in distress” and the progress of feminism of Disney princesses. I’m not sure if that is a good one though and worth researching about

That sounds really nice! However, I do think that Feminism is very overdone because of its nature influencing everyone to rewrite the odds and showcase it as something better in their PIPs (which is understandable, I was there too). But as I mentioned before, any topic can work if you research, and talk about it well enough (meaning you hit all the points - micro/meso/macro etc.)

But to answer your question, I feel as if the other two ideas that I pointed out were a bit better. Needless to say, try to have a small look around online on what you can find about the 'damsels in distress' topic and see what you can come up with.

Good luck!
