Hey all, I am applying for a Bachelor of Commerce with a finance major in 2021. I however want to achieved the assumed knowledge so as to proactively ensure I succeed in my course. I was curious if anyone currently doing the program can help me with what topics I should study. The assumed knowledge is HSC Advanced Mathematics and I am undertaking in Maths Standard 2 (although doing very well in it).

From these topics, which are redundant in my degree, and which have lots of emphasis? What do you guys recommend me going over and learning? Thanks in advance :)!!

A finance major would have a lot more maths in it than other commerce majors like marketing or HR.

In general, it would be good to go over financial maths, stats, and log and expo. Maybe have a dive into calculus to get a bit more familiar with the concepts as well. If you go into the economics side of things, you'll end up doing linear algebra and multivariable calculus which would be introduced in introductory units so you don't have to worry about that.

Thanks heaps! So you reckon skip functions + calculus? Worst case scenario if it pops up I can learn it in my free time but considering your comment, it will be revised over in class anyways.

I don’t think calculus would pop up as quickly as stats/log/expo but keep in mind that you will probably need it later. Bridging courses kinda suck so you might be better of doing an introductory math uni (math1000??? or similar) during your time at uni (these are more comprehensive and usually easy so you’ll get good grades), before you do a math heavy unit required in your course such as econ1202.

Ahh fair. I was going to learn it during my break after HSC. I'll have a lot of free time so it'll be perfect; I rather not do it at uni as it would collide with other work and increase workload and I'd prefer that to not be the case (for easier transition into uni).
