i'm in dubbo and have the NBN

i live next to an exchange so allegedly i have fibre to the home rather than node but my internet isn't substantially that much better than when i was on ADSL2+

Which NBN plan are you on though? If you're on the 12Mbps/1Mbps plan then those results make sense.

On a side note, I realised my Telstra 4G on my iPhone 7 yields faster speeds than my NBN 100/40 plan.

I know some people are obviously in a worse off position than I but my Telstra NBN whilst decent (100/40) drops out so frequently that my devices fail to connect, I wait for it to restart, etc... I actually miss my old Telstra Cable 100/2.4 which at least never had any reliability issues... ever.

Currently getting a strong 8.5 Mbps down, and 0.84 Mbps up.

Hopefully, NBN will deliver.

Makes me cry
Me too. It's 2020 and my downloads are slower than I was 8 years ago back when I had Telstra Cable internet (110Mbps down; some paltry token upload speed).

At least when I turn on Telstra 4G and burn through my data, it's at good speed (>400Mbps).

Telstra doesn't offer that in my area unless you decide to go into a business plan @$130 a month.

Might try Superloop curious if anyone is with them.
