Need help for subject selection (year 11) (1 Viewer)

Hello all, I'm currently in year 10 and my subject selection is this week and I would like all of your input before I select my subjects.

Right now I have two combinations of subjects that I'm torn between:
Combo 1: 3u Maths, Advanced English, Physics, Eco, Business, PDHPE
Combo 2: 3u Maths, 3u English, Physics, Chem, Eco.

For combo 1, I like the subjects (and PDHPE is easy) however Business Studies and PDHPE scale low. As for combo 2, I could do 3u English in year 11 to see if I like it, then drop it if I want to. However it has Chemistry which I don't enjoy, however will do good in if I put extra effort into it. It gives me more flexibility and offers higher scaling for year 12, however I like combo 1 better because it's more interesting.

Other things: I'm not sure what I want to do for university, but I would like to do Actuarial Sciences/Studies in UNSW or USyd because I like statistics, however 4u looks a tad bit boring.

Business is low scaling but combined with with ext units it would be fine I think.

If you are looking into actuarial studies, it is strongly recommended to do Extension 2 Maths in Year 12(Although, its definetly not necessary). Although, there is very little correlation between Ext 2 and Actuarial studies, the difficulty of Ext 2 will help prepare you for the course.(What i've heard from my friends)

You should decide what you like best: doing subjects you enjoy or having less subjects and more time to self study/have free time.

i also recommend doing 4u if you enjoy maths ^ it honestly makes 3u make so much more sense, especially with the syllabus change (im part of the first year doing it), the topics are definitely engaging (altho i cant say the same about 3u - stats BLUEGH). even though it sounds intimidating and difficult, it is actually not that bad once you learn the concepts!

Yeah it's correlated in a way I guess, since you need high problem solving skills for actuarial which you need for ext 2 maths as well. There are a few people that didn't do maths ext 2 in my cohort though.

What are the general opinions you've heard about Boredofstudies?
Would you consider sitting a BOS Trial for subjects other than the Math subjects?(This is to find out if it's worth it to expand)

I found 4u maths to be quite difficult (ended up getting 89 because school ranks screwed me over lol) but all that hard 4u basically made my 3u really good without trying too hard lol (got 96). Anyway now the 4u maths syllabus has gotten rid of a lot of the hard stuff in the old syllabus (conics etc) so I would definitely recommend going for 4u!

Yeah I definitely recommend maths ext 2... I was struggling so hard with it in the first sem, I was about to quit because I couldn't even do graphs or complex numbers LOL... but yeah over time once you practice and problem solving skills rise, it becomes fun. Btw once you get comfortable with the hard maths ext 2 questions, the hard maths ext 1 questions become easy and makes it an exam about silly mistakes.

Bodying easy 3u questions is easy. Last questions for most schools are easy as well. If you can body the Enrichment questions in the old Cambridge books, then respect.

Agreed. Since enrichment questions are really difficult, even when I use the interactive with worked solutions to check later on.

Foundation is real easy and development are okay, though some take time.

Well people have different natural abilities... just need to try and develop a strategy for yourself to improve ^^ as I said in an above post I was struggling with the easiest 4u topics that others were finding easy, so yep just work hard

This sentence screams with irony. What makes you think that you will put extra effort into a subject you don't enjoy? Serious question. If you don't enjoy something, you will dread doing the bare minimum work for it such as homework, so what is going to magically motivate you to put extra effort in? It's not as easy as it sounds. Anyone can do good in any subject if they just "put in extra effort". A big part of the HSC is about being motivated to do that extra study, because you actually like the subject. If you do a subject purely because of scaling, i wish you luck surviving 700+ days without burning out.

yeah you are absolutely right, idk why hscbuzman was offended. You didn't say anything negative about it. You just called it the asian 10, because most people who do that combo are asian. Nothing bad said. Nowadays, you can't say anything without someone going "BuT thAt'S RaCiSt" when it clearly isn't.

But when you're in Year 10, it's really hard to see what's going to be interesting in Year 12. Hitting calculus in Year 11 is a real surprise. It opens up amazing mathematical ways of thinking that the Year 10 me would never guessed as even possible. Statistics and physics suddenly become beautiful when seen from the perspective of calculus. The kinematics in Year 11 physics can look a little bland until you see how easily the ideas develop when you encounter them again in 3 unit Year 11 maths. So it's probably too early to write off 4 unit maths as "looks boring".

But also, why spend you're life doing work you don't enjoy? If when you get to calculus you don't find it enjoyable, then maybe stay away from 4u maths, actuarial studies and statistics, (and any form of engineering or physics.)
