Good to see this thread hasn't changed much in regards to question since I last came here :T
I took it that Kolmias was joking by saying that big 4 accounting is no where near as competitive as IB thus big 4 accounting would take in students from a range of uni's, not just the best... could be wrong tho

Mostly likely not, firstly because it's in Tax and really not something I want to do. Secondly, the interviewer and the director I had an interview with was super boring and rude at the same time, both didn't know each other and didn't know how to talk, was awkward silences after I answered my questions as they tried to think of something to ask me. Finally, I understand you don't go into a cadetship wanting money, but their remuneration package is approximately 3/4 of the package a competitor offered me. All in all, solid firm but doesn't seem like somewhere I want to work.

Oh yeah, also they're forcing me to do a single degree, opposed to another firm that don't mind if I take up a 4 year double.

Even though I'm younger then you, forget about the salary. Do what you feel will provide you the best opportunities to grow as a professional. THAT'S THE ENTIRE POINT OF A CADETSHIP!

At the level of undergraduate, you are gaining invaluable work experience which will give you a huge step up later on either within your organisation or outside. I wouldn't worry about salary too much if your objective is to get the experience in an organisation which you want to work at.

(in the scheme of things, your undergraduate salary will be peanuts compared to your potential professional salary down the track)

Salary should not be of concern unless you are not being paid legally. I can gaurantee most of your friends will not be earning as much as you anyway, and the head start on your career will be beneficial once you graduate. Experience over income is what your aiming for.

In Aidan's case, having a preferred form offer more is simply an additional benefit. I hope all of you have the choice to work for companies you have good vibes about too :)

In reality, I don't see myself staying at these organisations down the track. They're mid tiers, and really, I do have aspirations, not being a tax accountant in a mid tier for the rest of my life. Yes I value the experience highly but, the plan was to get 1-2 years experience in a mid tier, then possibly go over to say a big 4 in either another cadetship or do a few vacationers, so that I graduate with loads of experience under my belt and the opportunity to literally go anywhere I like.

Wow, elitism much from Aidan. If I was an employer, I wouldn't hire you. Your attitude is appalling. Really poor attitude towards your potential employers and to simply rubbish anyone who is a tax accountamt in mid tier public practice (god forbid jk) as someone without aspirations is disgraceful. :p

It's a cadetship, doesn't mean you'll do tax for your life. You can always internally transfer to other divisions. Although I admit tax doesn't have the best exit opps.

Yes it'll help. A common move I'd say from what I have seen. That being said, it may only help you get in the door but you may not get much credit/recognition for your experience (ie. you may go down a grade/level/title) given the difference in methodology/client base/niches/etc.

Yes, pretty much what seremify said it's a common move, you'll very likely need to start as a grad again for TAS/big MC, but i guess that's half the fun :p

All of you might diss people for already thinking about moving before starting, but the reality is, a lot of people move away from Cadetships after 1-3 years. I agree to an extent though that it's not great to have a mindset like that when you start because you'll always think of moving and thus might not try hard at your job, among other things,or get opportunities that otherwise could've led you to something you might like etc..But hey, at least these people have a plan to move forward into their career (Y).

Very rare to move divisions in mid-tiers,even if you do voice your opinion,things such as training costs,and budgetting/planning for that position etc..effect mid-tiers much more per person.

A tax cadetship is fine for exit opportunities, it can spun in a multitude of ways just like an audit cadetship if they want to move into finance for example, all corporate experience can be relevant enough when you're applying for graduate positions.

It's not great to just say things you read on the internet btw, you need to think it through if its relevant, the kind of threads you read that say tax doesn't have the best exit opportunties aren't as relevant to someone who is trying to move into other things during his university life for example.
