Yeh i was gonna use sum and product but he wanted to see another way..

If wu345 answer is correct, then my answer is only half correct. I got root 2 - 1 on the numerator and 7 on the denominator....

Correct!!Also if you write it in terms of $\binom{n}{r}$ you can see the pattern and don't have to do all terms of the expression. Now how about n stairs?

$Let $f(n)$ denote the possible combinations of 1 or 2 step moves on n stairs. $f(1) = 1, f(2) = 2$. Now consider the final move of n stairs. You either move one step forward from the $(n - 1)th$ step, or move two steps forward from the $(n-2)th$ step. The total possible combinations for $n$ steps is the sum of the $n-1$ possible combinations and the $n-2$ possible combinations. Hence, $f(n) = f(n-1) + f(n-2)$. Alternatively, this may be written as $F_{n+1}$ where $F_n$ represents the nth Fibonacci number.$

That's a bit tough. I would give the hint to treat the graphing like a normal stationary point etc. graph first. And maybe identify the asymptote.

Also extra hint: f(x)=x^e.e^(-x) to anyone who would overkill the quotient rule here

Thanks for help again, I got everything up to the last part of 27 where you said using the 'stars and bars' formula (not sure if i have learnt this yet - is this binomial?). Also sorry my bad, Paradoxica, read calculator wrong hahaha, limit should be 0 not -infinity

Stars and bars is a clever trick to doing combinatorics. Usually not necessary for 3U (in 4U it has been found to be useful for specific questions), refer to the principles in https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stars_and_bars_(combinatorics)

It does make life easier for 3U students that care to learn it anyway.

$\noindent This ``stars and bars'' trick is a classic trick for doing such combinatorial problems. I suggest you read about it online, maybe here for starters:$

$\noindent It's a method that allows us to do questions like ``how many ways can I place $k$ indistinguishable balls into $n$ distinguishable boxes'' in a routine manner. Equivalent types problems are ``how many ways can I select $r$ numbers from the numbers $1,2,\ldots,m$ if the order I select them is unimportant (and we choose the numbers with replacement)'' and ``how many solutions are there to the equation $x_1 + x_2 + \cdots + x_r = N$ if each $x_i$ is a non-negative integer''. (Knowing about stars and bars makes these types of problems almost trivial.)$
