The maximum velocity would be 3m/s, as 3 > -20. If it was the maximum speed you were looking for, it would be -20m/s, as |3| < |-20|.

Wouldn't it be -20m/s ? That's faster, just going in a negative direction (or not, sorry I don't do physics).

This is the way to go about the question for HSC purposes.

That would be maximum speed, not velocity.
