Order of Subjects for Double Major (1 Viewer)

Hey Guys,

So, I was messing around with order of subjects this morning, in order to see how I can fit in a finance major and a financial economics major into my four year Actuarial Studies / Commerce double degree.

I was looking for your thoughts on this 4 year subject plan -

Y1 Sem 1 (halfway through it) - ACCT1501, ECON1101, MGMT1001, MATH1151

Y1 Sem 2 - ACCT1511, ECON1102, ACTL1101, MATH1251

Y2 Sem 1 - FINS1613, ACTL2111, ACTL2131, GenEd 1 (NB this one is only offered only in Sem 1 and I want to really do this one)

Y2 Sem 2 - ACTL2102, ECON2101, ECON2206, FINS2624

2016/17 Summer - FINS1612, TABL1710

Y3 Sem 1 - ACTL3141, ACTL3151, ECON3114, ECON2209

Y3 Sem 2 - ACTL3162, ACTL3182, FINS3634, GenEd 2

2017/18 Summer - FINS3616

Y4 Sem 1 - ACTL4001, FINS3636, FINS3641, ECON3107

Y4 Sem 2 - ACTL4002, ACTL4303, ECON3206, FINS3635

In particular, I would really appreciate your thoughts/feedback on any of these aspects:

* pros/cons/problems with doing FINS2624 before FINS1612
* doing ECON3114 in Y3 Sem 1, before a lot of my other ECON subjects
* doing FINS3634 before FINS3616

Also from personal experience, the School of Economics is the biggest bitch I ever had to deal with in terms of clashes - so I hope you don't have any Economics course that clashes because they have the most disgusting and pathetic policy on course clashes of all time.

The reason I'm not overloading is because I don't want to affect my performance in my subjects (esp the ACTL ones) which count towards my Part I exemptions!

Also, could you elaborate on the problems with clashes you've had, especially with School of Economics?

Oh here we go

So basically I wanted to do ECON2112 - Game Theory this semester. I need only one more Economics course to finish my Economics minor, and after doing some basic stuff with it in ECON2101 - Micro 2, and then doing a whole course on it in ECON3123 - Economics of Corporations, I figured I'd do the implied prerequisite in 2112.

Unfortunately, it clashed with a computing course I'm doing this semester. So I applied for the clash.

ECON2112 have all their lectures online - and it's video too, not just listening, so you can see the slides. While the clash was being approved, I was listening to those, and doing the work for both subjects. I have two days off uni this semester, so I pretty much just did the work on my day off.

Since it's a clash, I asked my computing lecturer if he'd approve the clash - and he said sure why not.

I checked that none of the assessments between the two subjects clashed, and they didn't. I also got 90 in ECON3123, the course with 2112 as the implied prerequisite. Moreover, I have a full Semester 2 - so if I wanted to do an Economics course next semester, I'd have to overload. So I figured I'd get the clash, right?

To recap:

- I got an HD in the 3rd year course which pretty much has this second year course as a prerequisite
- I have two days off this semester
- All the lectures are online
- No assessments clash
- Tutorial does not clash
- I have to overload next semester if they don't give me the clash
- The lecturer for the computing course will allow the clash

And they did not approve the clash. Their "policy" on clashes is complete bullshit.


I was happy to do even -more- courses than I needed, because I wanted to do ECON2102 - Macro 2 as well, because I think Economics is a nice decent thing to learn. Also M. does Economics and she was giving me some tips on what courses to take, so that was really appreciated and she talks highly of it and I like it too so I thought of padding my year this year with Economics courses.

But no. So next semester, I have to take ECON2102 and hope that that doesn't clash, because I confirmed what would happen if it does clash. You know what they'll tell me? "Oh that's a shame that it clashes. Go find another subject to do. We're not approving your clash."

They should be happy that a student of my calibre is even interested in their courses.

I don't really know the structure of a Double Major in Finance and Financial Economics since I don't do these majors, but from what my mates are doing, they usually complete the compulsory FINS courses by their second year before moving onto their additional FINS electives. Note that most of them do only one major, whilst they may complete a minor in something else. For those who did FINS1613 in SEM1 of YR1, they usually proceed to do FINS1612 & FINS2624 in SEM1 of YR2 and then complete FINS3616 in SEM2, but for those who didn't do FINS1613 in SEM1 YR1, will complete FINS1612 + FINS1613 in SEM1 of YR2 and then FINS2624 and FINS3616 in SEM2 (assuming they make the wise decision of studying 1613 in SEM1 and not SEM2 of any year). I don't think doing FINS2624 before 1612 is going to do any harm since 2624 is mostly quantitative whilst 1612 is all qualitative. Again, you should probably talk to someone who is actually doing these majors, or even go to the ASB Student Centre and ask for some advice during the enrolment period for your 2016 SEM1 timetables.

Thanks a lot VBN! Will definitely take that on board. I was actually considering doing FINS1612 and FINS1613 both in Semester One of Year Two, but I need to do 3 courses in Summer Terms to fit in a double major, and due to only some courses being available in Summer, FINS1612 has to be done in Summer for me!

I will probably make an appointment with Student Centre and get some advice.

Tbh not keen on finishing a semester late, because it would disrupt my entry into the workforce and the actuarial industry especially when a lot of my peers will then be getting their hands on roles and positions I am gunning for ....

And also forgot to mention that I get veryyy bored in the summer holidays, so doing dem courses in summer will be able to keep me not bored LOL

You could still work full time and study part time. A lot of people do that and cope just fine.

The way I see it, it's fine you do FINS2624 before FINS1612 as these two courses aren't really correlated.
But you probably wouldn't want to do those four courses written for Y2 sem2 in the same time.

Fins2624 and Econ2206 are both quite challenging, and even though Econ2101 might not be that hard but it requires huge amount of mathematics.
You probably gonna find yourself struggling in the final exam as you need significant amount of time to study for these four courses.

2101 doesnt require that much maths, its like 2 unit calculus. The rest is stuff you learn in the course which isn't really maths, its economic concepts you apply the calculus to.

However, after talking to a few seniors, I've started to see the worth of doing a financial economics major is limited for many reasons (e.g. its applications and helpfulness to actuarial studies are limited and also because of the cost of doing some subjects in the summer). Instead, I am only going to do a finance major and utilise my 3 free 'slots' with probably ECON2101, ACTL3191 and ACTL3192 (3 relevant subjects which really really interest me )

As a result, I will be able to do ACTL3191 and ACTL3192 in fourth year, do FINS1612 before FINS2624 (not that it matters too much, as you said guys...), and do FINS3616 before FINS3634.

Imo would suggest doing FINS1612 and TABL1710 in 2015-2016 summer school, and move FINS3616 to 2016/2017 summer school. You have to consider that you're in your penultimate year in 2017, so you need to do your internships then (if you get one - not compulsory for actl students, thank goodness).

Yeh both of you are spot on, and the issue of trying to get internships which are usually running during summer holidays was an important issue in whether to do the double major of Finance and Financial Economics, and hence do some courses in summer school.

But after considering that and other reasons such as the relevance of the financial economics major to actuarial studies, I have dropped the idea of doing the financial economics major and will only be doing a finance major, as said in this post

That means I won't be needing to do any courses at all in summer school, so I'm fully open during those times for potential internships. In fact, getting rid of the financial economics major opens up three 'slots' in my 4 year degree, so I will be doing some relevant subjects that interest me (which are actually from the financial economics major) to fill up those 'slots'
