ABC reporter Jeremy Fernandez says people are leaving the building surrounding that Lindt cafe.

"We've been seeing a few workers in the Westpac buildings emerging floor by floor from their building and taken away to safety.

"They've been holed up in that building and been told not to move because the situation was very volatile, no-one knew what was going on and how dangerous the area was.

"The last few hours we've seen more people leaving this area."
