What would be better:

Obtaining 1/65 rank in standard english, or
Obtaining ~5/25 rank in advanced

At a ~400 rank school. Would the advanced class scale you down more than the aligning from first in standard (or second)?

Standard would be better IMO. But second in standard may be worse than advanced or about the same.

Advanced. Scales way better. Is the cohort strong? Like are all the marks grouped together at the top?

Probably Advanced.
Because if you don't get at least rank 1 Standard then it may easily be gg

This.

If you think you can maintain rank #1 in Standard (nothing less than #2) take it over Advanced if you really want to. However Standard isn't really easier by any means

If you have doubts of being first or at least second dropping is an awful idea

Looks like a tough decision but I'd say go with advanced. If you're going to do well in standard then you're going to do well in advanced (maybe a little worse since standard has easier texts) but the aligning will take care of that. You don't need rank one, rank two is alright as well but just make sure the gap between you and the first guy is as small as possible, and this applies to advanced as well.
