Under these laws, publicly insulting or disagreeing with someone using digital communication would be considered a hate crime. Using this standard, anyone who’s ever had an argument online could be fined or jailed.

Christ Sylvia, you're really going into the SOCJUS hate. Being an early participant in the controversy early, I can tell you that there are legitimate concerns from both sides. The only reason there has been so much hysteria involved in the events is because radicals from both sides are perpetually stirring the pot and arguing over things they disagree are the main issue.

There is little doubt amongst most of the online gaming community that ethics in 'games journalism' and the industry itself are a joke. The Dorito-Popes actions in 2012 is a clear indicator that something is wrong. Misrepresentation is also an issue within games, it'd be great to see a wealth of new in-depth female protagonists. The only problem with that is that development studios and publishers understand that they must cater to a mostly male audience in order to maximise profits. As for the problem of a higher amount of abuse targeted towards female developers due to their gender, I personally haven't seen this within my experience of playing and have observed to opposite. Of course this is myself but I don't think that the gender of a developer will necessarily sway me not purchase a game, only the content of that game will influence that decision.

But of course at the end of the day, it's just vidya and why must people bother on either side. If people are dissatisfied with games media, then don't read or give them notice. If people are dissatisfied with misrepresentation within the industry, then look for a niche part of the market that does cater towards your desires.
