Apparently the advertised ATAR for courses at usyd higher than what they actually are, to add to the prestige factor?

I want to get into arts (media and communication) that atar is 95.5, and my estimate atar is like 94.7-95.5 lol, could I still get in?

Thanks bro <3

Hey! Do you know roughly how many points lower the ACTUAL cutoffs are? 2,3,4 points? I may get 93-94 if they throw a screwball in Extension History...

it really depends on the uni, demand, course, etc. My course cutoff was ~95 and I got in with ~90.

That sucks, so if I get an atar of 95.4 I still have to do interviews and make an application for arts(media and communications) ?????????? :(
Yeah it appears so. Some courses apply it automatically, whereas some require you to send in an application.

It depends on the degree. I have a friend at USyd and there's a guy in his Arabic class who got knocked back from law with a 99.6 (cut-off 99.7).

The cutoff is the cutoff. If it says 95.5 it is 95.5.

There are some alternative entry schemes for some usyd degrees (eg "flexible entry") whereby a small number of students who have a mark below the published cutoff maybe made an offer. The number of students who get in via this method is quite small.

Remember the ATAR cut off can change. The course you quoted above may have had 95.5 last year, but that is no guarantee that it wont be 96 or 95 this year, based on supply and demand.

Basically a uni will tend to have a specific amount of spots on offer to do a specific program. The cut-off is subject to change every year which is set as the lowest ATAR (includes the bonus points some students may have received) which received an offer to study that program starting that specific year.

I had something like 106 accumulative for the engineering faculty at UNSW due to bonus points and the what not. For most other UNSW programs I had something like 101 (exception is those that require medicine or whatever those other programs are that don't have any bonus points at all (and yes Law does have quite a few bonus points actually)).

Also, the uni may set a standard to floor the cut-off. Many engineering programs still have a lot of space after main round offers and stuff (they'll have a star next to their cut-off mark like this : 91.00 * ) but they won't accept those students with cut-offs below that they think aren't suitable for engineering if they applied for an interview for FEAS. Really I think its quite an acceptable thing given that uni isn't as easy and laidback as high school and there is quite a lot of assumed knowledge here and there.

511200 B Arts 82.00
511207 B Arts(Media & Communications) 95.50
511208 B Arts (Languages) 98.50

Taken from the UAC thingy. Arts is only 82, but these two more specific ones are a lot higher.

Such revived hope lol
No idea tbh, it was a while back :p
The UAI cutoff was around 98.45 for that year and iirc he got something like 97
Don't worry too much

Of course it depends on the demand for that course, however generally speaking it won't change a whole lot from the previous year (there can be exceptions, of course). Also, it is possible to transfer from one course to another. So someone can get a low ATAR, do a random course and get a Distinction or higher and then transfer to the course which requires a high ATAR, therefore getting into a course that requires a high ATAR even after getting a much lower ATAR than required.
