I was told by my teacher that for the ATAR, if you're doing 12 units, you're top 10 units are chosen, what happens to that other 2 unit subject? Does it still get counted? My teacher was basically trying to say that you shouldn't drop a subject.

Now let's say I'm doing Chemistry, and so far so good, but I want to drop it and I'll end up with 10 units because it'll save me studying time that I can use for other subjects, is that a good idea? Now referring back to my teacher, if I continue doing Chemistry, and let's say it's that 2 unit subject that wasn't chosen in the top 10 units, what happens to it?

They choose the best 10 units to calculate your ATAR, so whats the point in doing more than 10.

So what happens to the last 2 unit subject? It doesn't get counted?

Doesn't get counted in ATAR...

May get 'bonus' points if subject relates to degree and you do well in it...

only ur best 10 units (always including english) are counted, but people keep 11 or 12 units in case of a safety net so that if they fail a 1 or 2 units subject, it won't affect their atar

Nothing happens to the subject that doesn't counted. It just doesn't count lol

The only problem with 10 units is that you need to make sure they're your best 10. If you think you can perform consistently well in all 10, then drop your poorest 2 units. No point waisting time and energy working on something that isn't going to count for you imho

Only your 10 best will count, the other two units act as a safety net in case you stuff up an assessment in any one subject.

IMHO tho, as long as you're confident in your 10 best, you don't need a back-up, since time required to study for that extra unit can be furhter used to perfect your 10 best. However, if you have any subjects that requires major projects, then it's a good idea to have a back up. This is due to the fact that although you can somewhat predict how a major work is going to be received, it's a lot more subjective (in a sense) than say short answers and multiple choice questions.
