I am currently in year 11 moving into year 12. My goal is to do computer science/software engineering with Co-Op.
Apart from the 96+ atar, what else are they looking for?
I have done debating for 2-3 years and also have been in the SRC and will likely be a prefect or vice captain.
What other things should I be doing apart from trying to achieve a 96+ atar.
Also will they choose someone who got 97 over someone who got 96?

Are you able to address each of these points in detail, with relevant experiences/examples?

  • Shows initiative and leadership
  • Makes a significant contribution to school or community
  • Communicates well
  • Enjoys working with other people
  • Wants to be active within the university and Co-op community
  • Has an interest in a career in industry or a government enterprise
  • Has ambitions and is keen to contribute in your chosen field
  • Cares about what is happening in the community, country and the world at large
Also will they choose someone who got 97 over someone who got 96?
Doesn't work like that. If you get to the interview stage, then not even a 99.95 will save you from a poor interview. The interview is what matters.

Pretty much on the money. When going for a scholarship or job, it's not so much what you have done, but what you have gained. You need a bit of breadth to your experiences, but mostly you need to have gained experiences which can help you address those questions. If they ask you a question about teamwork, you cant just say "I'm good at it", you need a good example/s to back that up.
