Some people get 60s, 70s, and like.. one 80s mark throughout a subject and end up with a final assessment mark of 85-86ish. how does that happen?

This. Not only that, different assessments within a subject also have different weightings. For example, our school's half yearlies for business weighted 10%, and our essays and trials weight 30% each.
