Hi There,

I need some advice (especially from past 4U students)

So some background - basically, as we've been doing 4U maths this year, as we finish each topic and even sub-sections of each topic, our teacher gives us worksheets with all the past hscs (to like 1988) that are on that topic to do as revision, and we do it as the year goes on. So that means by the end of the year, I will have done nearly every past 4u hsc q to like 1988 (of course ranging from Q1s to Q8s).

Now my question is - up to Trials, I will be doing Trial Papers, as recommended by many. However, after trials and in the lead up to HSC, I don't have HSCs to do (as I have done nearly all of them), which is the reccommended manner of revision in the weeks building up to the real HSC.

So then what do you guys recommend to do during HSC final revision - doing more and more trial papers (from schools like ruse, grammar, sydney boys/girls etc.) or do you recommended doing more questions from terry lee or maybe doing more questions from this blue book (http://www.phoenixeduc.com/shop/item/hsc-maths-extension-2-practice-questions/maths) whoever of you knows about this book or has it, or anything else I've not thought of.

like, if tldr, what do you guys suggest for practice in lead up to hsc, if i'm not gonna do past hscs duing that period?

gonna do sydney grammar trial papers (they're most like the HSC)
and also do the HSC past papers themselves because one needs to experience doing them 3 hours in a row...it different to doing them separately (i.e. by topic)

if i have time, I'm also going to go through Terry Lee and do the harder and more challenging questions

but rumble, i will do some of the trial papers in exam conditions (which are 3 hours as well)

and doing a past hsc in exam conditions will be a waste of 3 hours imo. because i'm doing questions i've seen before and I remember how to do them. its just rewriting a solution then in a way imo.

what do you think?

Phoenix is alright, but I think doing more trial papers would be the way to go. Primarily because I find Phoenix questions tend not to be too challenging, so trial papers would probably be the better option. In addition practicing with trial papers I find lets you work out any timing issues during exams more efficiently as opposed to just doing questions from a textbook.

Although, even if you've done all the HSC papers I would still suggest redoing a couple, because they tend to be the more imaginative papers. If it's tedious and boring maybe just challenge yourself to do it as fast as you can without loss of accuracy?

I'd personally do the ENTIRE HSC 4U papers again.

At least the more recent ones e.g. 2003-2013.

Also, after trials --> the 2014 papers for CSSA, independent, etc. will be available.

These are a MUST do imo before the HSC.

So yeah, you have past HSC and the 2014 papers for CSSA, independent, and other ones. This might also include the 2014 trials from other schools.

That's like more than enough for me :haha:

Hi ROT,

I understand what you mean, but as I said to rumble,

I guess if you've seen the questions before (and remember how to do them), it probably is a waste of time...

Just do more past trial papers... (like you said, you don't even need to do the entire paper, probably just the harder questions)

But yeah, 2014 trial papers (CSSA, independent, other schools, etc.) will be available.

Then you have questions from 4U Cambridge, Terry Lee, Excel (4U Excel is actually pretty decent even though it sounds... yeah...) and other textbooks.

(Personally, never used 4U Terry Lee :haha:)

In the end, the key is to expose yourself to as many questions as possible (source can be from anywhere basically).

hmm that makes a lot of sense ROT.

more input from other past 4U students will be great! :D

EDIT: btw ROT I was gonna rep that post, but it didn't let me :( sorry. haha

Still do some HSC 4U papers, especially 2012 and 2013 because of the new format. Do it more for the format and question types and make sure you do it in 3 hours. It will show you how fast you can get through each question so you know if you will have time left over/struggling to finish. Do at least from 2010.

But other than that, do mostly trial papers.
