I know many selective schools give out their atar estimates with the half yearly report but what about other schools?
are they required to release atar estimates or is this a selective school only thing?
(just wondering because I think my school does not seem to release them)

My school never released them, nor did they ever tell me of what my estimate was when asking to put it in applications.

Maybe some (selective) schools write it on your report, but not all. They didn't put their estimate on my report, and thankfully they didn't.

Why would they be required to release an estimate?

what if you want to do medicine? don't you need atar estimates for that?

I mis-wrote. I was meant to say maybe some do (as in, I don't actually know, but you claim to know). It is not a luxury...

Ask your school for an estimate.

I know for my applications and stuff they needed an estimate from my school. Though I told them I would rather not know the estimate they gave me as I didn't want it to affect me in any way.

So there will be cases where the school will estimate for you upon request, but it is not a luxury, nor is it accurate.

I had to make my own estimate on all my applications too and I can say that even though I had a range of 10 ATAR on those estimates, I still underestimated my estimates.
