Choosing Electives? (1 Viewer)

So I'm on the enrolment planner for B Arts and I'm kind of confused.

I get to choose 4 courses (Govt + International Relations, History, English and Sociology) and I also get to choose the things I want to study within them.

Except that there are all these electives that the site shows but I can't add them to my timetable, I can only add the junior units that I need to go onto senior units. Obviously I don't want to and can't major in all four of those courses so I want to be able to choose the interesting electives for some of them but I can't.

Does anyone know how to? or when I get to choose electives?

Also, does anyone do sociology? is it good?

Thanks x

Which two majors are you looking to complete?

I'm not really sure at the moment but probably Govt + International and either History or English.

Well my recommendation would be to complete as many junior level units in first year.

So what you want to do for the Government & Intl Studies major is to pick two 1XXX units and 6 2XXX/3XXX (where you have to complete at least 1 3XXX).

To complete a History major, you need to complete 6 2XXX/3XXX units where 4 of those units must be from the 'Core' list and at least one of those 'Core' units must be at a 3XXX level.

RE: 3XXX

You must complete four 2000-level units before you can do a 3000-level unit. You have a choice of three units: the Primary Source Research Project; History Beyond the Classroom; and the Historiography Research Project – each focused on an independently framed project .

Each senior unit involves a one-hour lecture and one-hour tutorial each week, and 6000 words of assessment, involving a proposal, bibliography, outline, drafts and a final 4000-word project.

The English major is arranged in the same way as History.

I've done SCLG1001/1002 - both very interesting. I would say that SCLG1001 is better than SCLG1002 mainly because of the topics eg. gender, social class and education. However it is a subject you need to keep up with everything (going to lectures will help with the final exam especially if Dr B is still the main lecturer). Plus there are lectures where a special guest will come in (and sometimes they are authors who will sign copies of your books/textbooks) and it is also a rewarding unit where sometimes after lectures Dr B will invite the whole class for coffee with the special guest on the day. :)

Oh wow thank you! That's really helpful!

So then where do electives come in? I noticed for example when I was looking at the History link that there are junior units, senior units and then electives. When do you choose electives?

passionxmusic: I was looking at some threads on sociology and some people were saying that it's the most awful subject ever and some have said it's great. I don't really know what sociology is but I decided to put it down anyway.

If you want to do an elective, you have to:

a) Make sure you meet all the prerequisites
b) Have enough space to cater for them (in other words, you need to figure how many elective spaces you have)

Ozko: Oh right I get it, I thought you just randomly chose them for fun and you didn't have to do any other units in that subjects. Thanks for your help!

Passionxmusic: That would be amazing! Thank you! :)
