Also, the work exp and the other credentials are not entirely critical, they just get you through the application stage. The scholarship is essentially going to be about how you present yourself at the interview

Don't lie. You will dig yourself in a deep hole during the scholarship interview because most of the questions they ask are in relation to your application.
This pretty much - if you are caught in a lie, that will pretty much be the end of you. With an employer, lying is one of the qualities that will automatically exclude an applicant and I'd imagine that it would be the same with universities.

Well, you need to be able to discuss the work experience and other stuff in an interview - if you're just putting stuff for the sake of it, they will be able to tell when they ask you about it.

They are just an easier medium to express oneself, not having certain credentials (school captain, prefect), by no means limit an individual's ability to get a scholarship. For Co-op, something like 16% are school captains, so that's just an example. However if it's work experience, esp. in relation to the field of study, it provides a good advantage over other candidates.

how many students are selected for the scholarships?
Scholarships don't work that way. There are lots of different types of scholarships, the amount of students selected depends on the type of scholarship. A lot of scholarships have criteria which is difficult for the average student to meet - which is kind of the point. I.e. there are a lot for indigenous students, students from disadvantaged backgrounds, in Engineering/IT there are often small scholarships for women etc.

Then there are co-op scholarships which are the biggest in terms of dollar value but the amount is not that impressive all things considered (in terms of the money, those programs offer more than that though) since you have to do work experience at the sponsor companies and the scholarship is essentially the pay for that spread over the course of your degree rather than just when you are working. (for UTS coop programs at least, i'd assume it's similar elsewhere). You'd be far too late to apply for a coop scholarship for 2014 entry.
