Subject selections for my school are due in a couple of weeks and I really need a range of opinions about what subjects I should drop or pick. Before today, I was adamant on dropping physics, purely because I was like "nup, lol" but I received my ranks and they were so much better than expected.

I'm planning on picking up ext 2 maths, so I will have 13 units. I don't /really/ want to put in extra effort for units that won't count and I prefer to do 11 units than 13, purely because I will have more time to work on my subjects, more specifically my major works (VA) and practice papers (maths, lol what else)

Subjects I am currently doing:
- 3U Eng (not dropping, even if ranks are eh because my marks hover around 90 anyway)
- 3U Maths, 4U in Y12 (top 72, w/e)
- VA (top 3)
- Food Technology (80% chance of topping)
- Physics (4/62)

I don't have ranks for VA and FT, because I have a good indication of where I am.

I have considered scaling, enjoyment, teachers, career requirements and rankings. Honestly, I am so unsure because I'm aiming to state rank for at least one subject anyway. So 13 units or should I drop something? :newburn:

Choose what you enjoy and what you are good at. You can always keep the 13 and see how things go. But you will have to be very dedicated and organized to keep up with the huge work load.

After all... Do you really need 13 units?

Are you aware of how poorly Food Technology scales? To be on target for your minimum ATAR of 98, you will need to score in the top 1% of the state. The corresponding numbers for your other options are:
English Adv (top 9%)
English X1 (13)
Maths X1 (34)
Maths X2 (60)
VA (4)
Physics (8)

Yes, I am aware of scaling and I have factored it in. It really doesn't help that I haven't lost any marks in that subject all year, according to the majority of my results. (and does physics really scale worse than Eng adv?!)

Taking your other subjects and your mark in these subjects into account, it seems highly unlikely that your food technology mark will be in your best ten units. That's not to say that you shouldn't keep it, but be aware that it's likely to play more of a role as a leisure activity than as a contributors to your ATAR.

Maybe talk to your teachers and get their opinions on what subject to drop. Try with 13 units and see how you go, then make a decision to drop one after seeing which ones you enjoy the most and still really want to do.
