Subject advice please (1 Viewer)

So I'm in quite a predicament. I want to have only 10 units for my HSC seeing as I don't see myself as really capable of handling 12 units and doing well. What I was planning to do was to drop Biology so I could work on my other subjects (especially English), however the results show that it is slightly better than Chemistry. Here are my rough ranks based in my cohort based on a prac exam and open-book test (both not really requiring much effort in learning the content):

Chemistry - 28/56 (30% assessment done)
Biology - ~15/60 (30% assessment done)

But the thing is, my Biology teacher is pretty hard to listen to and a pain to be around (I can't stand his classes), and as a result I don't really know anything about the second topic. Chemistry: I understand the concepts, but it just doesn't show in exams (working on this).

tldr; Drop Bio (can't stand the teacher, don't know content of second topic) or keep it (too risky to decide yet because of Chem)?

We are in the middle of the internals for the HSC.

I suggest you to keep Bio. I am on ten units as well, and I do Biology.

My teacher sets work and never checks it and is truly devious from the syllabus; going on and trying to make irrelevant links between his family life and biological ideas.

I self study Biology.

15/60 is a good rank. Maintain and increase. If the ranks are clustered, you should be able to move even higher.

I am sure you can and will do well. You just need motivation. Create it for yourself (e.g. the fear of failure, seeing a 70 ATAR when you want 90, whatever it may be).

Bio, you are not far from the top, whereas you are in the middle for chem. I would advise you to keep both.

Doing ten units is good when you are comfortable with what you are doing, but do not drop a subject that you have potential to get a band 5 or 6 in, due to your dislike of a certain teacher. If that was the case with me, I would be doing two units.

I'm not certain about my rank for Biology, it's just a rough self-estimate based on my ranks from previous assessments. According to my teacher, the Chemistry marks are very clustered (i.e. separated by 1 or 2 decimal places). Also, based on past years' results, Biology at my school has only managed 0-1 band 6's and I don't think I'll be that exception. Chemistry is around 3-8, but our cohort is said to be stronger than past years. I guess it's a possibility to achieve this if not a high band 5.. :S

Apparently the difference between a 30 out of 40% assessment mark and a 29% out of 40% assessment mark (total assessed so far) is approx. 5 ranks.

I would advise to keep both at the moment, however if you're not understanding and/or enjoying biology then i recommend dropping it

Reason being:
As you get closer to your HSC, you will be more motivated to study the subjects that you understand and that you love (just because it's more 'fun' in a sense), so even if your biology results are a bit better for now, come closer to trials and hsc, your chem might have significantly improved.

In saying that however, my rank was worse in bio than chem, I devoted about the same amount of time to both and I ended up doing a little bit better in bio than chem.
But maybe that's just how my mind works though

In that case drop bio and keep chem, with a strong cohort its at least a band 5 with the right balance of work, combined with the general trend of being a good scaling subject

I.e take a school like Baulko

Someone ranked 100 can get 91 and someone ranked 131 will still get 90 in english
