I was 'planning' on majoring in that as well. I think rippy might have been contemplating something along those lines too.

And then we did MBLG1901.
Oh god. :cold:

Wow that's interesting-what did you end up majoring in? (You do BMedSci right?) Rippy does BEng/BMedSci or something atm right and what is he majoring in?
I'm doing adv. science, going into second year. I haven't decided what I want to major in yet, but I'm doing chemistry, maths and physics units so something out of those three. Initially I was set on biochemistry and chemistry.

Not exactly sure, I think he's doing some neuroscience/pharmacology stuff now but he wants to transfer to med.

(In its defense I think MBLG1901 might have decent scaling given that I got about 8 marks higher than what I was expecting.)

It's the genetics that worries me. I'm probably going with MBLG 1001..

Yeah I looked up that course...so much hate. Let's be brave Aysce, brave.
DAMN GENETICS!

I don't know why I can never get my head around it. I assume you're doing 1901? Still tossing it up but leaning to 1001 imo

Hey another BSc(Adv) :) Looks like I'll be meeting some TTNEs :D

I think you're more researched on this, I only recently decided what city I was moving to.

But I'm pretty sure I'd do 1901 because I did pretty fairly well in HSC bio, so might as well take up on the adv there.

IMO it's always better to take an advanced unit when you have the option. There are generally smaller class sizes, better student-teacher contact and much more research-focused topics/tasks.

I completed a B. Sc. (Adv) this year. Expect 5 days a week for any science degree. 4 days if you're lucky. 3 days is unheard of unless you're taking a part time load.

I will expect 5 days then ,and thanks for the advice on the advanced units. Do the advanced units typically have nice scaling that makes it advantageous to do them?

And you are going into med somewhere now right? :)

I was just wondering something about the BSc (Adv), do you have to do any advanced subjects in the first year? or is it only in 2nd or 3rd years you have to do a minimum amount of advanced subjects (at least 12cp in 2nd year and at least 24cp in 3rd year?). I was always under the impression you didn't have to do any first year but this sort of confused me: In first year, full-time students normally enrol in 48cp of junior units, with 24cp of units completed at advanced level. (This is under Further Course Information > Study Plan at: http://sydney.edu.au/courses/Bachelor-of-Science-Advanced). So yea that got me confused, can anyone clarify?

Edit: Well I just myself realised straight after I posted that it said full-time students normally enrol and not are required to enrol but some clarification would still be nice. Thanks

how many hours would one be at uni for studying the bachelor of medical science and how many days could i fit that into?
at least 4 in first year

5 in second year (Soz)

And 4-5 in third year

I was 'planning' on majoring in that as well. I think rippy might have been contemplating something along those lines too.

yeah. I wanted to do two of Chem, bio, and biochem.

Now I'm looking at maths, neuro, or something. Lol

I'm majoring in the undecided. :D

No exactly sure, I think he's doing some neuroscience/pharmacology stuff now but he wants to transfer to med.
Next year I'm doing BIOL1993, MATH2961/2965/1015, PCOL2011/2012, PHSI2005, ANAT2010, and something else. Probs MATH2968 but it depends on how I go in first sem maths.

It's the genetics that worries me. I'm probably going with MBLG 1001..
it's not just the genetics that's terrible (I was in like the same boat as you going into it. Fucking hate genetics.)

I might be in BSc(Adv) next year (do BIOL1993/1903 with me!!)

(he barely just started posting in TTTNE)

Yep. You don't have to do advanced units in first year at all. :)

It's advisable to take them because it prepares you for the advanced workload in second and third year.

When it says that students normally do half at the advanced level that just means that's what a lot of students do. But most I know of do like all except 2 advanced units in first year.

How come double degrees are more work, I wanted to do a Comm/science degree, would that mean I have a tonne of work too? Cause it is 5 years while a normal comm or science is 3 and i figured with overlapping classes it should work out to about the same amount of work?

Yay UoS buddies, what exactly is the difference between 1903/1993 anyways, is it better to do Special Studies? (I would guess my bio score is good enough for Special Studies) What is the guide for picking Advanced or SS? (Interested for Chem 1A also, whether to just do normal or adv)

I'm going to need some Human Biology study buddies. I'm going to have no effing idea what I'm doing o_O. Why did I only do wishy washy humanities subjects for my HSC?!

Haha I did like an even split of maths/science (6u) and 6u of humanities.

With the electives on the basic timetable, can you do a random humanities for a bit of breadth in a science degree as there are random humanities subjects on the UoS list?

I didn't even do any science subjects (well I did Physics but didn't turn up to quite a few classes and didn't care about it at all) mainly because I thought the HSC syllabuses were really shit and now I'm going to be doing Advanced Science at Uni lol. 1st year is going to be tough for me but I am interested in science and I have read/looked at other science stuff, just didn't do the HSC science subjects.

And also, I would think you would be able to do it if it's on the list.

I was just having a minor freak out because in the handbook they recommended doing a bridging course if you haven't done HSC bio :eek2:

Didn't do HSC Bio (or any other science during Year 11 & 12) and ended up getting credit for both BIOL1001/1002. You'll be fine.

Champ, I didn't think you'd have to do bio in your degree though.

And HSC bio is pretty easy, I wouldn't worry about not having done it. Chem/Phys/Maths I'd probably consider bridging, although most of the Chem/Phys stuff in HSC is societal impacts blah blah that are in no way shape or form in uni science.

The only overlap you would have between Commerce and Science is maths probably. You still have to satisfy the requirements for both of them and that would be impossible in three years, given it takes three years to complete each on their own and you're only allowed to do a maximum of 30 cp a semester (usually 5 units of study).

It depends on the unit. Some units I've done scale ALL of their Units of Study which are at the same level (e.g I'm pretty sure chemistry scaled all first year units together) in which case it generally is better, but only if you do better than the normal students on the common content. When you get to third year though, you will usually only be in UoSs which have an enrollment of maybe 10 or 20 in which case very few HDs are given out (two maybe) if they scale that subject on its own.

Although doing an advanced subject in itself is a good point regardless of the mark, and a future employer would understand that if you got a C in the advanced version and someone got a D in the regular version, you're probably both of equal skill in that area.

Yep, I'm starting med at USyd this year.
