I was curious if it is rare for a first year at uni to apply for a cadetship.
I got my cadetship in my first year. I felt that it was a little easier for the year 12 students, however it's still very doable in first year.

Just curious, can you apply for scholarships if you have a cadetship?

I was wondering the exact the same thing and would love an answer!

So far I don't see why not, however you would have to find a scholarship that allows you to study part time. I know most if not all of the high achievers scholarships etc require full time study over the course of your degree, effectively meaning you cannot have both.

hello!! not meaning to intrude in the discussion, but just to clarify... it is possible to have both (and yes, it is unlikely you will find a scholarship that enables you to study part-time).

i have a scholarship (and am studying full-time) but I also work full-time (with a cadetship).

although, I never planned to get both (I only got the scholarship offer after the HSC results had come out, so I didn't apply for it with an intention to get one).

hope this added something !!

Really depends on the individual terms and conditions of the scholarship. I remember back in the day there were a couple of people who had received scholarships and balanced it with the cadetship- it depends on what the requirements are (e.g. minimum WAM, full time study, etc).

Pretty much reiterating what everyone else already said, but depends on the terms of the scholarship/cadetship.

I got a scholarship that was a one off payment in first year, where pretty much the only requirement was full time study. And since I only start working in second year it all worked out pretty well.

Boroughs called me about 3 weeks ago to arrange an interview, but I already took an offer so I said no. Not sure about the rest though!

Depends which firm, timing, if they have resourcing needs, etc... sometimes HR can be flexible but it really depends. Sounds like it's outside your control though and hopefully the firm will be understanding?

So for the people like seremify what sector have you/did you go into in the firm, like auditing, tax etc and what was it like. Trying to get an idea of it I went to the chartered accountants evening for year 11 and I didn't really have enough time to ask everything I wanted to so yeh five us an insight into the life of an accountant :)

Started in auditing - resources/services but transferred to auditing - financial services - banking and capital markets.

Hey, As far as I know, ESV have already conducted the telephone interviews and are currently undertaking the face to face interviews.

I'm applying for a cadetship in 2013 but i didn't want to make a new thread as it would be relevant here?

Regarding work experience, so far i have not had ANY work experience and this is worrying me. I have done extra curricular activities and will be doing some volunteering work this year and continuing onto next year.

Instead of applying for the usual retail jobs at my age, would it be more beneficial to gain some actual experience in the accounting/finance field? By this, i mean spending a week or two going to work with my parents and gaining experience like that? Both my parents work in Accounting so would be enough to remain competitive to others who have had retail experience?

Either way I don't think you can go wrong, I myself had the usual retail experience (3 years) when applying for cadetships and was successful, talking to others it was clear not everyone had even had a part time job so its not a deciding factor but rather an element which you could use in interviews etc.

Relevant work experience, paired with volunteering i'm sure would be equal to any retail experience others may have. A wide variety of extra curricular activities, leadership roles and a strong academic base is enough to get you to the early stages of receiving an offer, the important part comes later in regards to how you handle yourself in the group task situations as well as your ability to present well in an interview and throughout your interaction with the firms.

I hope this helps :)

For what it's worth, work experience (both relevant and non-relevant) are less of a deciding factor for cadetship recruitment. People understand you guys are still in high school and may not have had the opportunity or chance to work yet.

So am i right by saying extra curricular's would be more important then part time work experience for achieve a cadetship at a Big 4?

I'd never say one is more important than the other but rather, the value from either EC or work exp is being able to demonstrate some skills you have learnt or behaviours you exhibit which are relevant to the position you are applying for.

and just to add I really think the value is evident in the interviews when asked about leadership, dealing with conflict and handling pressure etc, so as long as you are capable of answering these or similar questions you should be fine.
