The UMAT test is for entry into undergraduate Medical and Health Science courses it is the "Undergraduate Medical and Health Science Admissions Test", whereas the GAMSAT is for entry into post-graduate courses as it is the "Graduate Medical School Admissions Test". If you are interested in applying for med straight out of school (as a school-leaver) you would need to sit the UMAT in year 12. You sit the GAMSAT towards the end of your first degree for entry into a post-grad course. They are both different - the UMAT does not require any academic knowledge/curriculum rather it is based on logical reasoning, problem-solving, interpersonal understanding and non-verbal reasoning, but the GAMSAT does require a certain university level of cross-disciplinary scientific knowledge in addition to the logical reasoning and problem solving stuff, and plus you have to write essays too! i got my info from this post http://www.umat.net.au/umat-vs-gamsat/ - they say that they are independent
